A laptop I recently purchased came with a fujitsu MV2100BH 100.0 GB drive. This drive when formatted under NTFS is only giving me about 86 GB of total space. I've got another 100GB drive that shows 93GB total space, how can there be such a large discrepancy? I've checked and there are no other partitions on the drive that can account for 7 GB of missing space. Anyone have any ideas why I'm only seeing 86 GB?

Thanks

How did you check for other partitions? On my Sony laptop, I have a 60gig drive and it shows up as 52gig because of the built-in recovery. If you right-click "My Computer" and go to "Manage", you can view the partitions by clicking on "Disk Management." If it shows one continuous "C" drive, then there are no other partitions. If there is a portion separate from the "C" drive, then you have a recovery/utility partition built into the drive. Most vendors are doing this now instead of providing CDs/DVDs for recovery. Alternatively, your system may give you the option to make the recovery media and then you can reformat your drive or merge the partitions using something like PartitionMagic.

Use Windows Drive Manager to inspect the hard drives: RIGHT CLICK MY COMPUTER>MANAGE>DISK MANAGEMENT. You can see all partitions, even hidden ones, quite easily from there.

Also, did you know that hard drive manufacturers say 1GB = 1000MB? Not quite, 1GB is 1024MB in the real world. This is a cause for MANY MANY posts in this forum because people think they have been cheated somehow on their hard drive space, lol.
