Fuji Finepix S700

Hello everyone,

I'm thinking of getting my girlfriend a new camera for Christmas, right now she has a Canon Powershot A540.

She is no where near a pro photographer, just your average user.

Would this be an upgrade? or is what she has better than the Fuji,

Any input appreciated,

Thanks

Thanks Flipped Gazelle,

I saw a local store that's running it at $149.

As to what she's looking for, something that would be a step up from what she has now, in the IQ department.

Eventually I'll be getting her a nice SLR, but it won't be happening this Christmas.

Thanks

Are we still talking about cameras?
(Sorry, I couldn't help myself)

Seriously, $149 is an awfully good price. The Fuji's IQ will not be any better than the Canon's, and the long end of the telephoto might be difficult to keep steady at times, although it is decently fast at the long end (F/3.7). Unfortunately, the S700 lacks image stabilization.

The only alternative I can come up with for around the same price is the Kodak Z8612 IS. It's rather similar to the S700, though a little smaller. The Kodak's lens is slightly faster at wide angle (F/2.8 vs S700's F/3.5) although slower at full telephoto (F/4.8). The big advantage is the Kodak has image stabilization. It's at Newegg for $160.

Thanks,

It appears I'm getting six of one and half a dozen of the other, so I'll just wait and pony up a bit more cash and get her something that's an actual upgrade in the image quality department.

Appreciate it

Had one, did not care for it at all. Slow often awful auto focus, AWFUL AWFUL lense distortion at higher zoom levels, lack of image stab. is killer. Awful at over iso 200. Shrug. Get one with I.S.
