Go to Target and if the Vivitar deal ($88 for 3 MP) is sold out, you can get a rain check and then ask to substitute it for another camera. You can do this right after you get the raincheck since the deal on on the rain check reciept . That means you should be able to get another camera for 33% off.

If Target has something on sale, and they don't have it, you can substitute for a different product with the same precentage off. So, since the Vivitar was not in stock, I was able to buy another camera @ 33% off.

After politely talking to the manager for 15 mins in the Sacramento Target, I was able to get 33% off the sony cyber-shot DSC-U30! I paid $133.99 + 10.38 tax for a total of 144.37 out the door!

Thank you for posting this hot deal! I am going to try to take a pic or scan my receipt by tomorrow so if anyone wants to jump on this.

The sale price of the Vivitar is 33% less than the regular price. If the store is sold out, you can ask for a raincheck. The raincheck says you can use it to get the Vivitar for $88 when it comes back in stock or take 33% off any other regular priced item within the same category. So basically you can use the 33% discount on any other digicam they carry.

I'm sure some will use the raincheck on other items like they did with the Madden rainchecks.

After getting a few PMs about getting the discount on cameras that are more expensive than that price point, I have decided to post up what I did. In addition, if someone can find me a host, I will take a pic of my reciept with my new camera so you can print it out and show them if you are having trouble! :)

So, it is Target policy to substitute items of the same product category BUT at the manager's discretion! So, the thing is, a lot of managers can interpret it however they want (i.e. for items of the same price). On the raincheck, however, it says you can substitute anything in the product category. Here is how I convinced the manager at my Target despite him taking this stance, that the item must be very close in price:

I asked for the vivitar that was on sale, and when they told me they were out of stock, I asked if I could get a raincheck. Then I proceeded to look at all the digicams they had, picking them all up, seeing their ease of use and determining what was useful for me. I just wanted a pick up and go camera, and the sony dsc-u30 was perfect. It was tiny and I have read a few favorable reviews, so I figured, what the hell, might as well try to get this one. As it was a $200 camera, I wasn't sure I could pull off getting the discount.

First I tried to do it through the cashier. Usually if you can convince the cashier without having to talk to the manager, it is easiest. Then, he called the manager because he was a bright young lad and didn't want to get in trouble for giving someone a ridiculous discount. So, the manager told him over the target phone system that he wouldn't allow it on such , and I asked if it would be possible to talk to the manager about it so I could understand the policy.

Next, the manager came out and he tried to tell me that the discount was ONLY for like items, which, in his mind were items similarly priced. I pointed out the raincheck says that it works for ANY item of the same product description. Then we talked for a while and I said that I wanted the vivitar, but when I got my raincheck, I couldn't resist the discount on the other digicams. So he went back and forth a bit because my friend picked up some nice $300 olympus and he was telling us there was no way he could give us a discount on these expensive cameras, especially at 33%.

In the end, he finally compromised with me because I wanted to work with him. I was really polite even though my friend kept badgering him for a discount and it was hurting our cause, but I was persistent(be careful when you are with friends and trying to get a deal!). The manager finally said he would allow the discount for a camera up to $200, even though it was a stretch for him, but not for anything more because the discount on the $300 camera would just be exponentially larger than the original discount off of the $130-150 camera. So THAT was when I suggested, well, if you are offering me $66 off my $200 camera, why can't you just take $66 off my friend's camera too so that he gets a decent discount without going over your discount limit? So he did that. In addition to that, you have the option of getting another 10% off by signing up for a target credit card, but that is up to you. I hope that answered everyone's questions!

good luck finding a 500+ camera in store. At all the targets around me, $300 was the top price point they carried in store.

It may not be as difficult for everyone as zero makes it sound.

I'm sure some of you remember the Madden 2004 raincheck deal that took 63% off an item. The csr's at my store never flinched and said get whatever software you want. Many people had no problem using that 63% discount on Windows and Office software (me included). Some people used the raincheck on PS2 and Xbox games. And yet a few others scored gaming systems with the discount.

If the csr's aren't anal and do what the raincheck says you'll be able to get any digicam you want with that discount. Thank goodness the csr's at the stores I shop at just do it and say they're doing exactly what the raincheck says :D

wish we had your kind of CSRs :)

Seriously though, back home in the Bay and over here in Sacramento, all I have are suspicious ass CSRs. There are too many FWers and such around here and so they are REALLY wary of anyone getting any deals. Especially here in the Sac area, the managers and CSRs are always assuming we don't have cash and are trying to rip them off...

If they only knew how much free cash us spoiled college kids have!

Thanks for laying the transaction out, zerodeefex. I agree that you would probably meet much less resistance doing it this way than insisting that you should get the $300 camera for $200. However, I did manage to pick up a raincheck tonite (no time to pick out a sub. camera, though)...and it does not say that the substitute you select must be priced within a given price range of the out of stock item. It simply says that it needs to come from "...within the same product category (i.e. TV for TV, doll for doll, shirt for shirt)." The manager you spoke with, in my opinion, had not a leg to stand on. I do not see anywhere on the raincheck that the policy implementation may/could vary depending on the manager's interpretation of it. There simply is no other way to interpret the wording on said document other than...a camera for a camera...or...a digital camera for a digital camera.

By the way, I noticed that my Target had placed a "Temporary Price Cut" of $20 or so on a couple of popular cameras (Canon A70 included). This may eliminate these cameras as a possible substitute, as the said document states that the substitute must be "... a regular-priced item within the same product category..."

I'm done ramblin' now. Will try to buy sub tomorrow. Good luck to others.

Actually, the Fuji I got was a temp price cut and they still took 33% off.

I went back tonite to shop for a sub. camera for the oos Vivitar. Was able to pick up the Canon A70 for $187 (temporary price cut had cam down to $279...less 33%) ! No fuss from the counter person.
