Fuel filter question

I'm a car newb so I would like to know what are some reasons to change the fuel filter every now and then? Will there be symptoms if the filter is old and dirty and needs changed?

Depending on if there is an external filter or not (some cars only have one attached to the fuel pump in the gas tank), It should be changed every 50k miles or so.
Some symptoms of a plugged fuel filter would include stalling, hesitation, and rough idle.

When the filter got clogged on my Tahoe, it would seriously drop power if you floored it. The higher it revved, the weaker it got.
Changed the filter, and you couldn't even blow through it. Fixed the problem instantly.

Some cars call for a longer than 50k cycle on the fuel filter. I'd go with what is factory recommended if there is no problem. If you are buying good gas and not kwikee mart special, chances are you shouldn't have problems.
