Electric motors and rheostats ARE primitive.

Well, it's probably not a simple electric motor, though.

I have a 1995 Ford Taurus. It has an Idle Air Control valve on it. I thought it was a simple solenoid valve. It actually runs off of a PWM signal on a duty cycle and is not simply a 12V solenoid. It's considerably more complex in operation than a simple solenoid.
