Was on the highway today doing about 65, eased up a bit going around a turn and then as I apply more gas as it straighten up I realize my sped is still going down a bit. I look down and see that I'm barely managing to maintain about 55, and see that my battery level is sucking down to almost empty. Pull over and notice I've got a wrench and CEL warning on the dash. Turn the car off then back on, let battery charge back up to about half again, and test the gas which seems responsive. No wrench light now. Pull back into traffic, get about 2 miles and experiencing the same thing. So stop again at the next exit ramp and take the street roads back home.

Check the code, a nice 2112, and find out the there are several years worth of vehicles with notoriously bad throttle body assemblies. Yeah for being just over my warranty mileage. First I get the toyota defective 02 sensors (at least they replaced the first one free) and now this. Best part was then spending about 90 minutes to get to talk to a person either of 2 service departments tell me that it doesn't appear to be under any warranty. And to just make the situation that much crappier, initial research seems to indicate that you can only get a new one from the dealer, or if you trust various online second hand sellers.

This is on a 2010 fusion hybrid, didn't have any problems on the secondary roads but was going at or under electric speed mostly anyway. Was pretty freaky to see the electric drive try to maintain 55 when its supposed to shut off just about 45, and damn did the battery drain before my eyes while it did so.

What mileage are you at? Any TSB on it?

Contact Ford Corp and see if they will help.

Also check the wires at the PCM. Seems they can come loose on this problem as well.

EDIT:
Heres the TSB
http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/fordguy4u/2012-03-16_174157_a1.pdf

Call ford and see if they will offer a good will fix on it since there is a updated version.

Double edit:
Seems it might be covered by the emissions warranty?

Hey, they have a Fix Or Repair Daily moniker to uphold.

Is it the servo motor that goes bad in the throttle body, or some other problem? How do you feel about wrenching? TB can be a fairly simple part to replace, or a gigantic pain.

From what I've read, it is a fairly easy repair, plus I have a retired mechanic in the family.

The difficulty at this point is it seems not an easy part to get.

The worst thing is that you've yet to actually experience the titular problem. Meaning 'Ford Parts,' as in the people that distribute the stuff to your local dealer's parts department, are easily the worst in the industry. I would not be surprised if your throttle is backordered with an ETA of 2018.

Seems to be a lot of issues with the ford throttle bodies. Throttle body on my wife's 2011 mustang went bad last week. It would stutter and lurch and get the wrench and switch to limp-home mode frequently. We had no idea what the issue was, so we took it to a local Ford dealer who said the throttle body was just dirty, and "cleaned" it for me. Two days later it started doing the same thing but even worse. Local dealer wants $337 (which is list) for the damn throttle body. I was able to get it from a dealer in Minnesota (Tousley ford) for $185, and will have it next week. Takes maybe 15 minutes to put a throttle body on a V6 mustang and is super easy. I'm sure the local dealer would try to ding me for $200-300 in labor for that.

EDIT: Tousley Ford (well now they are AutoNation Ford White Bear Lake) shipped my throttle body today.

lupi, I'd give them a try. They appear to have a throttle body for the 2010 Fusion Hybrid for $178.39.

This going from bad to ugly to slight redemption. Found the cheapest place as a dealership in AZ, was about to order both the assembly and gasket for $180 shipped. Then they called me and said it's on backordered and could be a week or more till they received one. By chance I decided to call my local place again, and they have 1 left and only want $171 for it. Whoever the idiot is that hasn't recalled these yet needs a good gut punch.

Did you call ford and ask for a good will repair? Long shot but always best to ask. If you already bought ask them to cover the parts and you cover the labor.

Does seem to be a more common issue.

Oh damn. I get parts from them at like 10% over cost via svtperformance.com.

They've always been awesome to deal with.

I wish my throttle body would fail, then I would upgrade it. Any part that fails on my car automatically gets a performance upgrade. Can't wait for my intake manifold to crack..."yeah, honey, the only replacement is this giant Kenne Bell blower"

This is how it's done.

Everything breaks. Quit whining about it and fix it so its better than before and in such a way that you will never ever ever have to worry about it again.

First off, it's a hybrid so not really shopping for "performance" parts. Second, everything breaks "eventually" would be acceptable if it wasn't a fleet wide problem that they've failed to address and generally find out because you just went from 60-0 and are sitting on the side of the road and then find out it's such a bad problem you have to play roulette for when you can get a replacement part..

Yeah I don't see how something as primitive as a throttle body can "break" honestly...

Probably not the actual throttle body that has an issue. Most likely the throttle position sensor is going bad. On these newer throttle bodies though you can't buy the TPS separately.

Speaking of primitive, you do realize that there are now throttle bodies in which the butterfly valve is controlled by a servo motor? Like, no cable attached to them besides some #18 AWG (or smaller) copper wires?

This was the headache I went through when my boss was adamant about getting an '06 Ford truck, and I had to fix it in 2012.

There is a sensor at the pedal which goes through a computer that sends a signal to a servo motor to open the throttle. Or they made a way to turn 1 failure point into 3. Lots of "benefits" to this method, but it also has it's downfalls.

All of the components for this are now in one self contained assembly. In this case there is a known bad electronics issue with those produced in 09-10.

Yes I know what fly by wire is. Its still a primitive mechanical device which should just work.

It does "just work" as long as you are comfortable driving around all the time in limp home mode.
