I currently am considering turning my main computer into an FTP server. It is an 800Mhz Pentium III system with 768 MB. I was thinking though I could do some other things with that system and just build a low level system for an FTP server. I am very new to running FTP's and would like some advice on building a server of this kind. Would like a Pentium II - 400 Mhz work just as well? Right now I have my file server slated to be used as a fileserver though. Thanks for any help you guys are able to give.

I do believe that this would be good enophe for a FTP server. I know people that run 233's as FTP servers with only 256 megs ram.

It should be ok. Just limit the amount of people that can connect to you depending on your internet connection. If you have a fast connection. Let a few in. If you have a slower connection let less in. People I know have always limited the number of connections to 4 on decent DSL connection.

Good luck..

Wolfie - Will using a slower processor make a big difference? I have a good cable connection, I work for the company. ;) Will the ammount of RAM make that big of a difference? I am just curious because I will just buy the parts to make a smaller computer and I can find other stuff to do with the Pentium III, like SETI or something. :) Thanks again for anyones help.
