ftp sync?

Is there anything out there that will sync files (with control similar to chronosync) over FTP? I emailed them, but unfortunately they said v4 won't have it, so I'd be waiting for v5, if they even try to. Syncback on windows had this.

I just finished setting up my freenas backup server, and AFP is ass slow (as is SMB I believe). I can't figure out why it seems to spike at 3MB/s and then drop to near 0, then spike back up. FTP is about 70-80% of the theoretical max, which works for me. Transmit and Chronosync do have "sync" options, but it's a little too simplified, and not automatic. I'd actually be fine w/ 3MB/s because I'll rarely have anything huge to transfer, but it's not consistent.

I thought about rsync too, but I've read of some issues, and it suffers from PITA implementation 😛 I'm not sure if the issues pertain to me though, as I'm not interested in maintaining permissions. Although, if anyone steals my systems, I'm screwed, ha.

Any thoughts?

Automated backups with Transmit:

AFP/SMB is good for small, quick file transfers (a few gigs or less), while FTP is much better (40 MB/sec on average on my Gigabit-connected NAS). If you're backing up to FTP off-site, then backups will only be as fast as your upload connection.

Well, I have directories scattered about I want to keep in sync. I just don't want set up a dozen different jobs and lose track of it. I like to have a visual of "oh look, these directories here, and not those." Basically, I'm lazy.

Kaidio, interesting, though I'd want to see if I could do that with cyberduck. But this gets back to the whole lazy problem, heh. I will probably end up setting rsync up.

I wouldn't call that a "lazy" issue...its just human nature. That's what makes Time Machine so great...set and forget. What about a simple Automator-based FTP script to clone your Time Machine backup (locally) to your FTP server? Time Machine works hourly, so just work your script around it.

imo Apple needs to release a Time Machine "Take 2" update that adds an "Advanced" button to created exclusions, edit the time schedule, and add additional backup options (NAS, FTP, etc.).

I'm not using Time Machine, but I do agree it needs that feature. I'm sticking with chronosync mostly for that reason. The initial sync took about an hr/GB.

actually, now i remember why i didn't want to use rsync exactly. I couldn't easily keep old copies of stuff.
