My dad has been droning on and on and on about building him (/his company) an FTP server....but i was wondering if you needed the insanly huge servers, or will the remains of an old presario internet pc with linux work?
Doesn't take much hardware to run an FTP site, it really depends on the amount of traffic though.
Maybe a p4 3ghz HT w/ 1GB ram and raid on FreeBSD, running PureFTP or Proftp? Even that would be overkill in most cases. In any event, I would focus primarily on disk performance and redundancy.
