FTP server software for NT4?

I have a new potential client that would be happier if I were running an FTP server.
I have three other methods available to all my customers for file management and these have worked fine for them for 7 years of running this hosting business.
I like to say that I was here before the dot com frenzy, during the dot com craziness and I'm still here after the dot com crash 😉

Does anyone know of an NT server ftp package that is easy to use, easy to maintain, secure and doesn't cost much.

Sorry if some think this is OT - it just seemed to me to be Networking related, I will also ask in the OS forum. Thanks.

Not sure either if this is the right forum or not.

However, I can tell you that the software I use is great. Unfortunately, it doesn't meet your requirement of 'not costing'. It's $40 to license it.

Serv-U FTPdaemon by rhinosoft. I run this on WinXP and on my DC that runs 2000 Advanced Server, so I'm rather confident it would run perfectly under NT4. I love it. They've got a thirty day trial available for download. You can set up different root directories for each user, set up one for anonymous access, throttle the connections...all sorts of neat stuff with a really slick easy to understand gui. It also installs as a service so it automatically loads upon boot/reboot.

If you are using Nt4/2000 you can you the FTP server that comes with IIS. It works well and the biggest part is that it is FREE. Probably the biggest drawback is that IIS has not always been known as one of the most secure products, but that is generally with IIS's web server. I personally use SERV U FTP. It has a small footprint, stable, reliable, and secure, but it does cost a few dollars.

<< I use Serv-u also works excellent Ausm >>

Works particularly well for those ratio'ed ftp sites 😉

Seriously though, Serv-U is a great system to use.

Thanks for all the ideas, I am trying Bullitproof's ftp server right now.
I appreciate the help.

Haven't tried Bulletproof's server, but the client is AWESOME. I highly recommend that for anyone as an FTP client.

WarFTP is cool, but a little trickier to config. I know it is rather finicky on passive connections, and even more finiscky when behind a home router such as the linksys.

Good luck.

Another vote again for Serv-U.

you can create so many policies and restrictions and everything is so easy.

I also love the links feature ...

Wiz, if you don't want to spend any money though, and want to setup simple FTP, you can do so for free by installing windows NT4.0 option pack on your system. It includes MS FTP Server.

Thanks, doesn't the ftp server for NT require IIS? I use a more secure web server on the NT4 OS - I couldn't possibly afford experiences like "Red Dawn".

I don't expect to use the ftp much so I don't see paying much for it is justified, however the one client that wants it will be paying enough to cover some expense.

I got BulletProof FTP set up pretty quickly yesterday. They are still working on making it run as a service, but I have had a custom designed service starter (run app as service) since 1995. It pays to have friends and relatives working at MS 😉
So far I like what I got and it's only $30.00 to register. I will try this out for the 30 days and if I like it then it's the one I will keep.
I already got an "atta boy" from the potential client this morning, so things are going well.

Now if the tech sector would come out of the depression maybe we could all start making some $$$ again.
