FTP server on ATT broadband

I just got broadband internet via ATT today 😀

No one can seem to connect to it except me from my 3 PCs, is this because att blocks ftp servers or is this for some other reason.

I assume you have a router to split your cable connection. If so, did you forward the necessary ports to the computer hosting the FTP server?

well I am using ICS in windows xp and the machine that i am using to share the connection from is where I have the ftp server on...it was set up the same way when I had DSL and it worked.

I dont get why it wont work on here.

Have one of your friends telnet to your ip on port 21 and see if they get a response...

I didn't realize the problem occured after changing ISP's.

thats the thing I dont get though, I cant even ping mine, or another friend's computers from outside the att broadband network, I havent tried pinging him from home, cuz I couldnt remember his IP.

Has anyone here been able to set up an ftp server on the att broadband network 🙁:|

I got my FTP server up and running on ATT Cable Broadband.

I am using a BEFSR41 Linksys 4 ports router.
I am using GuildFTPd on Windows 2000.

It's pretty straight forward. I am using the default setting in GuildFTPd, the only thing I did on GuildFTPd is to create accounts and setup limits and options.

In the router part, I just did port forwarding to my server system and checked the box for UDP and TCP/IP.

If you have more questions, give me more details, I will see what I can help you. 🙂

I rebooted the pc and it started working 😱

Sad to admit that I never thought of doing that in the first place, but after that it started working. 😀

Sorry for all the trouble and thanks for all the advice.

btw I am using guildftpd right now!

A word of warning... running a server of any sort (web or ftp) is against ATT Broadband's TOS. If you keep a low profile, you prolly won't get caught, but I'd be careful

What'll happen if you got caught by ATT running a FTP server? Anyone experience this situation? I am just wondering what they'll do on you.

Thanks

all they can do is terminate your service agreement and not provide you service...

well that's the gist of it anyways.

Yeah, that might be one way, but there might be more catches such as fine you.

I'm looking through ATT Broadband site, but they make it so hard that I can't even find the TOS agreement. LOL

I doubt they'd fine you. If they were out to do that, a whole lot of people would get fined, because a whole lot of AT&T users install a warez'd copy of Win2K AS or the like (just to feel "l33t") and stupidly leave IIS checked (and subsequently get their boxen jacked by CodeRed/Nimda).

I've been running an FTP/rsync server on AT&T broadband for months now, and AT&T doesn't seem to care. My theory is that they're pretty lax about how you use the bandwidth you're given, as long as you don't run some service that disrupts the AT&T network (like a DHCP server). Try to steal yourself some extra bandwidth by uncapping your cable modem, though, and they get pretty pissed off--I've heard of them permanently terminating service and actually blacklisting uncappers for that sort of thing.

Now that's a better answer. 🙂 Thanks!

um...I ran a FTP server on ATT Broadband also. I don't think they care either. There's barely any users login to my FTP, because it's a private FTP.

I did heard about modding the cable modem and get extra bandwidth though. That's what ATT really cares about, because they will lose alot of money on it.

oh-well, thanks!

can someone please show me its in the ATT Broadband's TOS

i'm planning on haveing a Web/ftp sever and i really don't want to lose my cable internet
I know may ppl do have sever with ATT Broadband....I'm paying for the bandwidth let me use it the way i want to...as long as i'm not takeing up more bandwidth then i pay for and not mess around with ATT severs, it sounds alright to me...or its that jusr me?
