ftp question

I've been having problems connecting to a friends ftp host. I've got an SMC barricade router and I keep the firewall up. I'm running Windows 2000. He's set up the ftp port to 8021 instead of the standard port 21 for his own security reasons. When I try to connect to it, I get an invalid port error. Any suggestions on the router settings I should use to make this work? (I've tried connecting with the DMZ host enable, but still no go.) I'm puzzled.

Check your ftp client software and disable passive mode. If passive mode is already disabled, enable it. That should do the trick, unless you have a really funky firewall.

If you're using a browser as your ftp client, don't. Use ws-ftp or some equivalent.

What Astaroth33 said, just a slight change in recommended ftp client... try smartftp, free, upgrades quite often and a feature set that can dazzle the most spoiled of internet users 😉
