FTP problem with website

A website I admin will no longer let me in via FTP (Filezilla or via Windows command line ftp). The error returned is "530 Login authentication failed".

I can use the same credentials to get in via cpanel, and I used the same credentials to edit a page in MS Word, so I know the username/password is correct.

I checked via cpanel to make sure the account was permitted to use FTP, it was. I created a completely new account with FTP privileges and that doesn't work either.

Last week our domain name expired but we got it renewed through another registrar. The site works fine, but for 3 years I have not had any trouble with FTP, and now all of a sudden I can't get it to work. Maybe the domain name expiration had something to do with it, but I don't see how.

Any ideas?

Are you putting username@domain.com for the username field in the ftp client? Also, make sure you are connecting to ftp.domain.com as well. cPanel has some quirks like that to ensure uniqueness of login credentials from hosting account to hosting account.

If you still can't get in then there's something wrong with the FTP server and you should open a support ticket with your provider.

Thanks. I tried but failed to connect using your suggestions and contacted the hosting service. They said they needed to reset something and they'll email when it's ready.

[edit - they fixed it. Thanks again.]
