FTP or HTTP download?

HTTP seems to start faster for me. probably because of the lack of login & port commands required. so that's what I go with.

yes the 1/2 second of time saved is important to me :p

It doesn't really matter. They're normally both the same speed.

Use the FTP link if you can. HTTP links are normally for compatability.

I think 5 years ago there was a speed benifit with ftp, but they seem equal nowadays. I click on one, if it takes a moment before beginning, I click on the other.
