FTP Opening Router Ports Question

I recently became interested in setting up my own FTP server with Filezilla. Now in setting this up I need to open some ports on my router. The listen port I chose was 800 and the port range I chose was 55000-56000.

My main concern is security. Will the potentially open my network up to a lot of attacks? Is there something I should to lessen that chance.

Thank you for your help.

I thought this would be better in the network section since that is what my main concern is for security but feel free to move it to another if you need to.

So doing the encryption would work for the data but would that mean the same safety there would apply to my network too with the ports?
