The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is seeking an antitrust ruling against Rambus on the grounds that the memory developer destroyed material evidence. If found guilty, Rambus could forfeit enforcement rights to technology patents valued at more than $1 billion.

I hope so.

I hope they get fair treatment under the law. Why do you hope they get prosecuted? If they committed the crime, then I agree. However, we know nothing (At least not enough to make a judgement) about the case and shouldn't be speculating on it. Why does everyone have something against Rambus? What did they ever do except develop a worthwhile competitor in the memory industry?

well they violated the terms of their contract with JEDEC and tried to extort money from SDRAM makers

If this is true, then I agree. As I said, if they are guilty then I think they should be punished. I just don't feel the users of this forum have the knowledge to judge them.

it is true, their cases were thrown out in the US and germany and everyone has stopped paying them royalties on SDRAM.

You haven't been here as long as I have then. I have been in many discussions in this forum about the dispicable extortion tactics of Rambus on other memory manufacturers and it is well documented. I have a bias based on the outright lies Rambus has said about the product they have. I have never supported Rambus, and never will, under any circumstance.

Read the article. Rambus is being sued for destroying evidence. Hello? Can you say "ENRON?". Can you say "ARTHUR ANDERSON?"

The Justice dept does not make a habit of filing frivilous lawsuits.

That is all well and good. All I am saying is I will reserve my judgement in this case until a real judge makes his decision. We do not have all the facts, and the Department of Justice is not infallible. What is wrong with waiting until the facts come out instead of jumping to conclusions?

RAMBUS is near death anyway, might as well put it out of it's misery and get some Justice at the same time. Good riddance RAMBUS!

Rambus had legal enforceable patents. Then they entered a group to develop new technologies, without notifying them of the patents. Anything new the group developed belongs to the group and not to Rambus. But that says nothing about the original, valid, legally obtained patents. I get the impression that many of you want both sets thrown out - but no one has provided any good reason to throw both out.

Rambus itself isn't dead Yellowstone seems very promising. Many companies are giving that a good look. Prepare for Rambus to be in many of the next generation of products.

Rambus has in fact allready teamed up with Sony to make the memory subsystem of the PS3. PS2 also runs on Rambus technology so that is a pretty decent source of income for the company thru licence fees. There are also a few Handheld manufacturers looking at puting Rambus in their next gen products so they are not quite dead yet.

Rambus is corporate scum, bottom line. The only reason Intel is still with them even after publicly stating it was a mistake to ally with them, is because of contractual obligations they cannot get out of.

Someone would buy up the tech, most likely.

no, the patents were in the process of being approved. it took them several tries before they found a patent officer that would grant a patent. several years after sdram had been on the market, rambus received patents for certain things that were put into the JEDEC standard. that was when they started their litigation. AFAIK patents aren't turned over to JEDEC, but that they need to be informed so they can create a royalty-free standard.

Had Rambus not stolen the technology that it did, memory technology would be far advanced from where it is now. Think DDR with Rambus interface, Rambus speed with sub-DDR latency, that what we would have right now if it wasn't for Rambus, Inc.

Which would be the best thing to happen for the technology, undoubtedly :)
