I was talking to a guy yesterday who has one, he was telling me you can get any station you want and they even have HD receivers. Does anyone here have one? And no charge but the upfront cost of the equipment

Never heard of them. I have officially tuned into this thread, however.

There aren't many FTA channels in North America - I believe "FTA satellite" over here is generally a euphemism for "illegal satellite". It consists of a dish (~$25) and a receiver box ($100 - $400). The box has a USB connector to allow you to occasionally update it with a code that decrypts the satellite signal and allows you to continue receiving free TV service. So yes, basically there is only an upfront cost.

What he said. Depending on the receiver, some you will have to manually update via cable or usb and some will auto-update with a ethernet plugged in.

There is free programming but not much that interest the average consumer here in North America. Goolge up on it. If you need help setting up KU or C dishes for the NA birds then just let me know.

FTA is legal in the US.

Also you basically point your dish to a certain satellite...usually they are European or Asian so you get their channels. You can get some channels off of Dish's satellites but i dont think you can get any off of DTV's.

Not when you receive illegal channels as the majority of the users with this do.

My gf's Dad does this to get Indian channels, but he got screwed because apparently all the Indian channels/satellites went to a new encryption(Nagra3) and new satellite that has not been cracked yet. So he went from 10 Indian channels down to 1. Sucks, but thats the price you pay for FTA receivers.

I considered it myself, but the constant code updating, the horribly inaccurate/missing TV Guide menu, and lack of an easy to setup and use DVR makes it not worth it for me. Yes it would save me so much money, but the reliability of using the tv guide menu, and DVR aren't worth the cost savings.
