I've seen the ACNS lab before. It's off the chain. Raised floors, 60 degrees, halon systems ... the room is bigger than a lot of houses ... and it's just freaking amazing!!!

those kinda remind me of the server room at work ... cept they have about 200 old HP netservers, and them a bunch of f***ing huge DB and app servers, and a bunch of AS400s and RS/6000s and then about 1000sq feet of Satelite equiptment (and a satelite dish the size of a 3 story building outside)

sad ... the room i work in has about 50 old PIII hp vectras with 128mb of ram

Interesting to see. What was a supercomputer 10 years ago is now a fairly entry level PC. A supercomputer 5 years ago is just slightly ahead of a top of the line desktop today. Look at the specs of the top machine - it's probably what you'll have on your desk in five years.

Keep in mind that clock speed doesn't mean everything in these machines. The Operating Systems and CPU's more or less were designed to work hand and hand were optomized to take complete advantage of each other. You can tweak much more out of them and make them uber efficent in what they do instead of the systems that most of us have at home to play games and do email.

My prof was talking about this the other day. He mentioned when he was working at General Dynamics (aerospace/military contractor), he had access to a Cray YMP like in the list. He says a 2Ghz PC with matlab today would school it.
