fsecure detects W32/Malware

Hey all

I just randomized my HDD with Dban and installed a fresh windows xp install. I updated everything and installed spybot S&D and Avira Antivir ran full updates and scans and detected nothing. I then went to fsecures free scanner and it detected something. Report stated this:

Result: 1 malware found
W32/Malware (virus)

* C:\SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION\_RESTORE{B13EC8BE-2C69-41DA-B763-5CE3CA8CDCC8}\RP17\A0004752.EXE (Submitted)

Could this be a false positive? how can I have a virus already when I just reinstalled windows and downloaded all my software on a different computer that checks out fine with fsecure? I've had fsecure detect falsely before when it said my spyware blaster updater was a virus when I know it isn't. Fsecures site is kind of vague on their classification of W32/Malware and a search of that file extension on google didn't turn up much. I also plugged the drive into a totally different computer and ran avira antivir on it and also came back with no detections.

Should I delete, disinfect, or leave it be?

Any Ideas?

Most antivirus software now incorporates a spyware database, and the spybot s&d is quite extensive. Most likely the Fsecure scanner's heuristics picked up a generic pattern in an executable used by either applications left in a restore point.

Purge your restore points, and rescan. 🙂
