I've not gotten any spyware since I switched to Opera.

The best way to stop spyware is to prevent it.

Recommended:

Opera / Firefox
Spybot S&D + immunizations
Adaware
HijackThis
CWShredder
AVG
hardware firewall
Windows XP SP2
All win updates
Win firewall (SP2) on (better than nothing)
(Optional) ZoneAlarm
A well configured HOSTS file

And finally, the most important one of all:

you != dumbass

Everything on there is free to use, except the hardware firewall. Opera is only $15 for students, otherwise ad supported. IMO, Opera > Firefox, but, firefox is better than IE anyday.

This is all well and good for people like us, but take a step back and look at how ridiculous this advice is for someone like your parents or coworkers who just want to turn on the computer and use it. And that's 99% of the population. This isn't a realistic solution. Just goes to show you how immature the computer industry really is, when people have to go through crap like this just to browse the web effectively.

If you're going to use IE, at least disable ActiveX.

I personally use Firefox, since it's infinitely better than IE, but I occasionally need to help secure other people's IE browsers. When you disable ActiveX and then go to a site that uses it, IE launches an obnoxious message to the tune of "Your Current Security Settings Prohibit Running ActiveX Controls on this Page". Is there anyway in hell to disable this message from popping up everytime you go to a site with ActiveX but have ActiveX disabled??

I've never disabled ActiveX for IE, but I've done it for Avant which is based on IE. In Avant, nothing pops up when ActiveX is disabled.

I guess Avant suppresses the message then, because I certainly get it quite often in IE. Not that it matters, since I use Firefox.
