Is it possible to use a processor with a 400 MHZ FSB on a motherboard that claims to support 533/800 MHZ FSB? I have an old Celeron which I need to find a motherboard for.

Then it work with any S478 motherboard that supports 400MHz FSB. My MSI 865PE motherboard says only (FSB 533/800) on the box but it still supports 400MHz FSB. You need to check your motherboard manual and from the manufacturer website.

I think as long as it is pin compatable, the bios should handel the rest. You could always change it manually right?

Thanks for that. I was under the impression the pins were different. Don't play with Intel ;) A bit too hot, even for a water rig..

It won't neccisarlily work. Not all socket 478 chips will work with all 478 boards. There are willimattes, northwoods, and prescotts. Not all cores will work with all boards. There are 400, 533, and 800mhz FSB chips as well, not all of which work with all boards. Some are 400mhz FSB only, some are 400/533, some are 533/800 only, and some will support all 3 FSB, but still not all cores. So you need to be sure the motherboard will support if first. If it's a 400mhz FSB celeron, and the motherboard only supports 533/800mhz FSB, if it does work at all, it's going to be overclocking the chip from the get go.
