this is as close to the right fourm as i could get so here goes
my nf7-s board's fsb hsf failed.
when i took it in to the shop we just changed out the hsf with a new board upon removal i was shocked to find only the center of the northbridge chip had thermal compound on it and further the stock hsf really is light and even apeared to be plastic  so we covered the chip with an even layer of as5 and replaced the hsf.
there was some sort of clear residue on the chip at the edges like an oily substance. i hope this wasnt chip juice.
at any rate i realize why fsb 200+ is so hard on my system even with corsaire ram the fsb gets too hot. so i purchased a tiny hsf that has screw holes in the same places and plan to shorten it a little and lap it.it will weigh 10 times as much as the stock hsf and have a much bigger fan.
my question is this is there any wisdom at this point in lapping the fsb as well i have read several articles that claim the nforce fsb chip is not nearly flat. i do posess the skills and proper tools to do the job but fear killing my board. not that much though as i love to live on the edge. is it better to just put a thick layer of as5 in the center to make up for the lack of flatness?
thank you

lap it if you're patient and willing. i've seen it done and apparently it works well. it won't kill it as the nforce 2's design is very robust. cut a hole in a anti-static bag, pop the MB in with the hole slightly larger than the northbride, tape around the chip and away you go.

on the other hand, since you can already hit 200FSB, it might not be necessary to do so.

referring to the northbridge as FSB is kinda weird, might i suggest not doing that? ;)

My NB HS+F was the same. I think it's some kind of cheap metal, not plastic. With just blob of thermal grease partially covering the chip. I assumes the "juice" was from the thermal grease, like when you leave a tuble standing for a while and the grease will separate into some clear juice and the white/silver particuls.

If ur only gonna run @ FSB of 200, polly no need to lap. In fact, the supplied HSF, plus a good coating of as5 should more than suffice. It does for me, and that seems the general concensus on the nf7 specific forums. Of course, if it's something you would enjoy doing, by all means-go for it. :)

thanks for the input and sorry for not using tech terms correctly after chopping this hsf down and drilling it out i am convinced that it will do a fantastic job, it runs whisper quiet and moves a lot of air and heat i will just install it with a generous layer of as5.
i am also a little suprised to hear that 200 mhz fsb is considered as a good fsb speed i think that with my ram chip and board i should be able to get 210 or more fsb. i must be dreamin though
one again thank you for the input

No ur not dreaming. (not sure how got the impression 200 FSB is considered good-it ain't bad, just normal) Seems all nf7's can do 2I5-220 ish, some can go beyond that

northbridges don't really make enough heat to justify AS5 and lapping, just stick that sucker back on with some paste.

also, the FSB doesnt make heat, voltage does. jacking the FSB shouldn't be limited by heat unless your using extra voltage to do so.
