I listed an item (DVD ROM) with a model number, conditions, photo. Someone bought it from me. They take it, and then they realize it doesn't play DVD-Rs and +Rs. Calls me back and figures he doesn't want to flash the firmware, he wants a refund.

I offer him a refund, with all his money back. We met up locally, so no shipping. Am I right in giving his money back even though I took the time to list it etc, or should it be sour grapes for him because I listed a model number (and gave him every opportunity to ask questions)?

Wow, this is one of the first times i have been stumped on a FS&T issue.
I would have to check the specs on the dvdrom, if it said it does then i would refund, otherwise i probably wouldnt.

I did offer because I have good heat and I'm a good seller. I will refund his money either way - the question is would you do the same in my situation, or would you tell him that he's responsible for figuring it out?

It works as I stated, I stand by my non-DOA guarantee, but it doesn't read his DVD-Rs, etc.

Apparantly it does work, but he doesn't want to flash it because it requires going into DOS and a floppy. The guy knows basic tech stuff but he's afraid (?) of doing it.

You have to be joking.

I would not give him a refund. How does he think this is your fault?

Did you know it didn't read +-R formats? It sounds like you did, and IMO you should have stated this. In the end he wouldn't have anything to stand on if you refused a refund, but I'd say you're a jerk if you didn't.

I wouldn't have offered a refund. Caveat emptor-- if he had needed that functionality, he should have asked about it before the sale.

No, I sold it as what it was. A DVD ROM drive. I didn't know DVD ROMs could read -R +R, because mine never could.

Partially, I'm just refunding it because it was just $20, and I'd rather not have a neutral/neg on my heat. The guy lives about 1 hour drive, and he is meeting up with me (twice!) over $20 (CDN!, that's like $17US) so I guess this money is really important to him.
