Space shuttle fire sale! Free after $28.8m in S&H and some Congressional lobbying
By Ross Miller posted Aug 20th 2010 8:42PM
Hey, you! Yeah, you! Come here and listen. Have you ever wanted to own your very own space shuttle? Of course you have, and now NASA is giving away one orbiters apiece to three lucky winners free of charge. All you need to do is follow these three steps:
Be a qualified institution. Currently there's just 21 in the running, including the Kennedy Space Center and the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum.
Possess the proper indoor facility to house the veteran astro-car in a climate-controlled environment. It should also have a big door since at no time can it be dismantled.
Pay for shipping and handling. According to the Wall Street Journal, that entails having a runway in your backyard, strapping the shuttle to the back of a specialized 747 jet, and covering post-flight repairs. Estimated cost is $28.8 million.
Should you meet the above requirements and manage to add yourself to the list of suitors, that gives you a 13.64 percent unweighted probability to nab one! Just because NASA picks you, though, doesn't mean you actually win -- and if that logic seems fuzzy, allow us to clarify with a quote from aerospace engineer and shuttle historian Dennis Jenkins: "Congress will immediately go into an uproar and un-decide for them." Tricky fine print, best of luck!

Its still absolutely disgusting to me that Obama can find 100's of billions for his friends in the banks and unions but can't seem to find a couple extra bucks to keep the Shuttle flying until we have a viable replacement. We're going to have to kiss the ass of the Russian's to get our guys into space. What a joke, unfortunately its not funny and its embarrassing to our country.

And the reason we need to spend tax dollars on getting people into space is?

Well have I got some great news for you! 99 percent of people in the US, and 100 percent of people outside the US, don't care. Now turn that frown upside down.

countless discoveries and technologies that make your life easier every day, cures for diseases that save your life, and looking for a habitable planet after earth is depleted of all its resources isnt enough for you?

Really? Which technologies derived from the manned space program have improved my life which could not have been developed w/o the manned space program? Which diseases have been cured as a result of the manned space program.

Do the math on the energy requirements for moving stuff from ground to interstellar speeds and tell me again how we're going to escape a depleted planet.

Really? All that from the manned space program? Are you sure?

Personally I'm all for unmanned probes exploring the outer reaches of the Solar System but actually sending _people_ up there seems much less cost-effective.

Unless they are bankers. We really should have sent all of them up there some time ago. Told them it was 'a mission to colonise Mars' or something.
(Surely they couldn't manage to bankrupt Mars?)

Overrated. We had a vision screening system in the Air Force when pilots were needed in WW2. Maybe NASA devised of a better screening system, but it's not like we would be retarded and unable to tell who can see and who can't... Sigh. Come on.

Joystick controllers? And those are mainly for gamers? I know Airbus has embraced joystick flight controllers, but look at Boeing. They continue to insist with the 777 and 787 that people prefer a flightstick between their legs. Many pilots agree. So maybe we have video games, but it's not like without space flight we wouldn't have developed a joystick to play games with.

Now let's see how this world would have existed without the semiconductor industry... :D

You must be one of those Americans who forgot that Bush signed TARP into law. :) I know, I know, P&N.. oh well. :)

Anyway, I want a space shuttle, anyone wanna throw a few bucks together and group buy? I'm in for $10.

Damn, if we went along with a lot of the reasoning in this thread, we would still be in the dark ages.

"Why would you dig? What good could come from looking for something in dirt? There is definitely nothing to be gained from the time, energy, and effort to do so."

Luckily for humankind, there are plenty of people who see the importance in scientific projects, and the ancillary discoveries that are made searching for the greatest of answers.

Seconded. The state of the US Space Program is sickening today.

The problem is the shuttles are so old they don't just require more and more to operate, but that they are becoming moer and more unsafe.
The real problem was the Republicans mismanagement of the replacement program. Billions down the tubes during their reign of error.
