I purchased a copy of Windows Xp Pro Sp1 on in the for sale forum and when I went to activate it the site came back with it being an invailid key. It origanly came with a Dell PC and the seller assured me that it had not be activated. Do you guys think it is fair for me to ask for my money back?

Here is a Link to a similar sale. There was no COA label in the package.

The seller assured me that it was not pre activated.

There are not NFR stickers on the booklet.

It's pre-activated only if you installed it on a Dell PC. The COA is on the side of Dell's PC which should be included with the sale. Didn't it ask for a CD key if you install it on a non-Dell?

No it did not which I thought was strange.

I have seen the COA label "slide" under the CD so that is why I didn't really worry about their being no COA in the picture he sent me.

Ironically enough, i have a copy of Windows XP Home i purchased off of someone from FSFT about a year or so ago that was originally for a dell (its even got DELL plastered all over the CD). For some reason, everytime i reinstall it, i have to enter the key 2-3 times before it takes. Keeps coming up Invalid at first.

BTW, you can call Microsoft to find out whats going on. I did that the first time i had to activate it and they were totally cool with it.

The Dell versions of WinXP are tricky to install. You might have to call Microsoft to make it work.

To be honest, this isn't the seller's fault and you shouldn't expect a refund if he disclosed to you that it was a Dell version of WinXP.

Well it is the sellers fault if the activation key is already used. Or is invalid.

It's not invalid and it's technically not used. The Dell version of WinXP doesn't require activation because there's an activation code burned in the BIOS of all Dells that ship with WinXP. Problem is that the companion copy of WinXP looks for that activation code. Microsoft has a way to override that, but you'll have to call them up and actually speak to a live technician.

This isn't anything new, nor is it a secret. Found this link with in about 30 seconds using Google.

I can personally vouch for being able to install a Dell copy of WinXP on a non-Dell system but you will have to call Microsoft.

The bottom line is you didn't research your purchase well enough. Unless the seller concealed that this was a Dell copy of WinXP, which I assume he/she didn't because you have yet to mention anything like that.
