Frys: Xbox 360 HD-DVD, Remote, King Kong Bundle: $35

Well, the 360 DVD player already upconverts. But, let me discuss why this is both a good deal and a bad deal.

Bad deal:
1. HD-DVD is obsolete.
2. Fry's was offering crazy bundles with the player (like, Harry Potter 1-5) for $40-$50 not too long ago.
3. 360 can't output the new HD audio codecs.

Good deal:
1. HD-DVDs might be obsolete, but it's cheaper to buy HD-DVDs than rent Blu-Rays.
2. Extra drive means you don't need to remove the game from your 360 every time you need to watch a movie.
3. Can be used as a spare (HD-)DVD drive for your computer (handy for netbooks!).

If you're using your 360 as your primary DVD player, or want to, I'd strongly recommend the drive. Otherwise, it's back to "depends on your preferences".

Also It may be important to add that the drive is much quieter than at least the earlier optical drives in the xbox that sound like a jet engine (important more so for viewing movies since during quiet scenes without planes the extra sound may be out of place 😉)

Just be careful, Fry's likes to repack returns & mark them as new. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but so far it's been a 50/50 chance of getting something that someone else had already used.

I bought one recently on a trip to the Chicago area, it was missing the HD-DVD King Kong, usb cable and it was clear someone had used the drive. The drive didn't work properly so I had to return it.

If this is the MS remote, that goes for $23 at Amazon by itself (other brands are ~$15). An external DVD drive will be $30+ too, but they would usually be a burner not just a reader.

In for one. Needed a remote anyways. Worst case scenario, the drive gets used as an external drive for the girlfriends and my netbooks, saving me the $40 I would've dropped on one otherwise.

Any good deals on HDDVDs these days?

Uh... HD DVDs have been incredibly cheap for a while now because they're a dead technology. Wherever you find is selling them will be quite cheap.
