Went to the Fry's in San Jose Brokaw today and they had this scanner for 39.99. Very nice price for a 1200dpi scanner from what I've seen compared to other brands. Read reviews on the 8700s brothers and they've all seem to have gotten pretty good remarks so the 8700 shouldn't be too shabby.

Don't know if it's regional to the Bay Area or if it's nationwide.

Yeah fine, Epson. From what I recall, there was a lower cost scanner or two in recent history that didn't fare so well in tests.

This is definitely a good deal and since it comes with legit Paperport, it makes it even better.

Re Epson scanners, yea they made great scanners....I've got the 1240U that still gets raves in reviews...but they don't have drivers for Windows XP....so that great scanner that I had humming away with Windowns ME is just sitting here gathering dust. The Espon site with a date of 11/01 says that maybe drivers will be available in early 2002...yea, well it's almost February.

Three boos for Epson..think if they don't publish drivers for the scanner you've got, maybe you'll buy another one with current drivers.

Same for Altec Lansing. I've got their great software that gives you total control via USB over your speakers, but it won't work in Windows XP and they have no plans for updated software.

And how about HP, their 930 series, the HP toolbox is crippled under Win XP.

Boo, hiss...... :(

I went to Brokaw Frys today and Visioneer 8700 was for $99.
Did your scanner come in its original package or the oem package??

I checked the price of this at Fry's Palo Alto over the weekend and also found it to be $99. Fry's did have a Umax Astra 3400 on sale for $29 (!), but after doing a little research I decided to pass, even at that price.

Well, I don't know if this will help but, I got the Epson 636u and it unfortunately does not have XP drivers as well but, I was able to get it to work. I simply downloaded the win2000 drivers and ran that installation. It asked for some color calibration files which does not come with the drivers but, I was able to find it on my system. Just run a file search. I think it those files come with XP or it could come with Photoshop I'm not really sure though. Hope that helps. And yes Epson Scanners are awesome.

The 8700 I got was a new retail boxed one. If you wanna try PMing or something, I got a scan of my receipt here.

I doubt we could PM using your receipt as the deal appears to be over, but thanks for the effort. And congrats on a good deal.
