So it seems to have been a year since I went to Fry's, it must take that long for my memories to fade.

On my list: new pc case for $14 after rebate, LCD TV wall mount, CD, MP3 player for wife's car...

Found the PC case first, looks cheap as crap, I worry about the quality of the PSU if it & the case are only $14, but it'll be behind a desk door, no one will ever see it, it might last a year, & chunk it into cart.

Over to the car stereos, find a nice looking Panasonic, wife wants to see one before I buy it for her, but what the fsck, it's a great price, look for a box, find them & they look like they were placed in a clothes dryer for a week, beat to crap, 3/4 of them have the innocous "returned but good" label on them, but Fry's shoppers know it just made it back to the repackaging elves in the back of the store, no one even bothered to see if there was even a head unit in there, it could actually be a brick, pass on it just out of fear that I'd have to come back if it didn't work or my wife didn't like it...

Zoom over to the TV dept, prob 250 different TV's on display, look at the accessories aisle, of course there aren't any mounts... Search for a salesman who won't make eye contact with me because he just got done porking a stocker of the same sex in the back room or something (not that there's anything wrong with that if he washed his hands), or put a secret ingredient into the beef jerky this morning, who knows... Anyway, he makes even less eye contact when he learns I only want an LCD wall mount & not a $6K DLP Rambus Plasma 72" monitor, points me to the bottom shelf under the 27" tube tv's. I go over squat down & tug the packages out because of course the prices don't show, first one I pull out $699! WTF, I just looked these up on Amazon & BB, they ranged between $59 & $200, pull out another one, $399, Arrrggghhh.

I shove the last horrendously overpriced VESA compliant wall mount back into the bottom shelf, seeing they're all priced between $399-$699 & turn around in a semi squat, noting the "returned but still good" sticker on the PC case box I had in my cart, that I hadn't seen because they put it on the bottom of the box.....

I stood up & walked out.

LOL. I don't have one nearby so I cannot say anything good or bad about them. They do seem to have some tempting bargains in Hot Deals but I cannot take advantage of them as I mentioned.

I noticed alot of stuff had that "returned but still good sticker" on it when i went there the other day. Even if the box is all messed up theyll only give you like a $2 discount.

They were evidently all out, except for the returned one:|

It looked cheap (shiny beige plastic), but the Antec stuff I've bought has always been reliable, thought it'd be a good case.

The case itself isnt' bad at all. IIRC, no drive rails, but it has a novel way of opening the side that I like.

Yeah, because the value of a damaged box is much greater than $2

Come on, be realistic. We're talking about returned items here. You buy it and you're risking the item being:

1) Defective
2) Missing parts
3) Dirty / Used

It's like buying a used car and only getting $100 off.

I assume they sell the tv's at a discounted price (compared to others) and make money on the accessories so I'm not surprised on the mounts. Perhaps they cut a break in price to those who buy them with the set, either way, that's their perogative.

If you see it cheaper online, buy it online. Then you have to deal with mailing back and forth if there's a problem... hence the higher priced (or poorer quality) local stuff.

The returned but good stuff, no argument there. Let the buyer beware. But apparently they have a decent enough return policy if they take all that crap back.

Overall I'd love to have a Fry's nearby. Just for the selection and competition. They certainly aren't perfect but no worse than avg retailer, imo.

Fry's kicks ass on sales prices, it's just I never seem to need what they have on sale, or it's all gone or what's left is returned.

I'd prob love them if they were only a couple of miles away, but a 40 mile round trip & getting skunked a couple of times ruins it for me.

Which is why Fry's has a better return policy than the public library. If you buy a returned item and it's defective, you can return it just as if it was an unreturned item. I have never been hassled for a single return at Fry's, even when I was returning for no other reason except that I changed my mind, except that sometimes you have to fight them to refund your CC or else they try to sneak a gift card on you. And I also open and inspect the contents of every box prior to check-out. Is that a big deal?
The Fry's near me doesn't allow bad returns either. They inspect the contents of and double-check parts serial #'s for every return. So the returned items are generally in good shape and complete or it will be noted otherwise on the box sticker and the price reduced accordingly.
And Fry's has the lowest employee theft rate among electronics retailers nationwide, so you really don't have to worry about the employees swapping parts like at the other stores.

Except for the poor customer service, most of what people say about Frys is pure FUD. And when compared to CompUSA or Best Buy, I really don't think the customer service at Fry's is all that bad.
