Like the title says this is pretty cheap for retail box comes with power dvd and some useless roxio softeware but nice deal for a cheap but yet effective dvd burner!

The Artec one list as a 12x -RW thats why I didn't even think to buy that one! -rw is like beta vhs nice but most dvd players can't play them most play +r.

I made sense out of most of that, but you're mistaken. The drive supports:
write
12x DVD+R
8x DVD-R
4x DVD+/-RW
40x CD-R
24x CD-RW

read
12x DVD-ROM
40x CD-ROM

It seems like a good deal, depending on the reviews. Too lazy to look it up because I don't need it. Anyways, DVD-R came out before DVD+R and it's still around. In fact virtually all drives now are dual format.

separate topic:
the 25 pack of DVD+R (2.4x-4x) on sale for $12.25 are Optodisc OR4 media. You can read the brand on the inner ring from the top. I'm pretty disappointed with the 8x Optodisc OR8 media I bought a couple of weeks ago, so I didn't buy the OR4 even though it's pretty cheap. <3 the cheap Lead Data 4x DVD-R... those work great. Would buy lots of those if it was the same price.

If it's BTC, then its probably and unbadged Sony (BTC make the Sony drives now, and it appears NEC make the Pioneers).

DVD-R is much more compatible for me than DVD+R, unless you have BitSetting, then a DVD+R looks like a DVD-ROM to players.

www.newegg.com has a huge selection of 8-12x DVD+/-RW and 2.4x double layer drives for $73-92 (NEC, OptoWrite, LG, Sony).

Note that the Pioneer DVR-108/A08XL and NEC ND3500a 16x DVD+/-RW and 4x DL drives are arriving on the market at around $130.

BTC drive are not rebadged sony drive, sony doesn't make drives any more they use rebadged Optorite and LiteOn drives and have never used rebadged BTC drives.
Pioneer makes their own drives they just use the NEC chipset.
