Intel Celeron D 330, 2.66GHz Retail CPU, 533Mhz FSB, $84.99

Intel P4 3.2GHz Combo, OEM CPU, 800MHz FSB, $219.99

AMD A64 3200+ Combo, Retail CPU, $219.99

Intel P4 530 Combo, 3.0GHz OEM CPU, 800MHz FSB, PCI-E 16x, $229.99

not sure if these deals are nationwide

so which one would u recommend? i think i'd pick the P4 530 combo...it's almost as fast as the P4 3.2GHz plus its mobo has the newest features

For curiousity, what is the need for a gigabit lan for small networks?

The nForce3 lanparty board? I might have to pick that up if that's the case.

gigabit ethernet is pointless for home networking.... even a 74gb raptor bursting won't saturate a current 100mb cable during a peer to peer transfer....

the bottleneck is the transfer rate of the HDDs involved... not the network infrastructure

You don't know what kind of mobo the $219 3200+ combo comes with do you?

I am going to get PCI-E once my x800 xl comes in but for now I have an AGP 9800 pro. If this board would last me a few months til I get PCI-E it would be worth the ~$30

edit: I just called them and it's socket 754 anyway so that kills it for me....

Huh? 100mbit ethernet can very easily be saturated when transferring from peer to peer over the LAN. 100mbit is only around 12MB/sec at most - usually less because of overhead. On the inner (i.e. slowest) tracks, a WD740GD has a transfer rate of 54MB/sec (http://www.storagereview.com/a...20040126WD740GD_2.html). Even 5 year old 10GB/platter drives can hit 30MB/sec on the outer tracks.

If you frequently transfer lots of data across systems on your local network, gigabit can save quite a bit of time.

The AMD 64 3200+ combo is a great deal. Here's the LINK

I'm pretty sure the motherboard is the ECS 755-A2. Don't confuse this board as another 'P.O.S.' as they have known for. In fact, there are numerous rave reviews.

Here

Another review

I think I'll use this as my home media desktop... to store and edit photos and videos.

I got in on the 3200 and mb deal 2 weeks ago. It is the ECS as stated. And as far as I am concerned it works just fine. BTW, I got it when it was $199.

I have to second this positive opinion on gigabit networking for home use. Upgrading my home network from 100 mbit to 1000 mbit allowed me to move DVD images (4.7 gigabytes) in one-half the time.

Damn, so the price on the 3200+ combo went up?
Wait, I thought the $199 version was with the OEM CPU though right?

At any rate, I'm tempted to wait till the AMD price drops next month to see if they're anything decent...I figure the socket 754 stuff will be going the way of the dodo next month so the prices for those in particular should be going down.

I was going to go PCI-E but then I realized that I'm broke and thus will not be purchasing the latest and greatest video just yet lol.

details, please. I was planning on buying a A64 3000+ next week. Should I hold off?

What kind of price drop do you expect?
