Not really that hot if you compare to this one at NewEgg. It is a PCMCIA card for $16.50 + shipping (~$5).
They also have a PCI version for $26.00 + same shipping on this page. (second item down on the page)

I've been looking for a PCI card......when I went to Fry's Monday.....they had some pcmcia cards for $9.95...so look out for those....

btw the trendnet ones have THE worst range... EVAR!!! it can only go in the span of one room from my router...

Hadn't heard that or read it anywhere but good to know. I am a bit confused though. From what I've seen (and no, I haven't seem them all), most generic wireless cards/adapters tend to have (more or less) the same basic range. Yes, some of the higher quality (and higher priced) ones can do a bit better but there isn't a great deal of difference in the "rest of the pack". Could this have been a one time thing or a WAP problem? Curious.

It can also be the laptop. I bought one of them cheapy BB laptop last xmas. With the exact same WiFi PCMCIA card, I get much better receptions on a Compaq and an IBM laptops than this Toshiba. Btw, I had an Orinoco Gold before, and now on a D-Link. Still prefer the Orinoco. I heard not-so-good things about the airlink softwares.

If anybody goes to the Anaheim Fry's, they're not on the shelves anymore... They're hidden on the very top where they normally keep the overstock. Had an employee looking and finally say they must be out and give up. Then I looked up and moved some stuff... Tada!

The price tags still say $39.99 and there's no shelf tag that says the lower price, but the cashier only charged me $24.99.

cosign. i had one, even with line of sight, about 20 feet away, if i position my laptop so the card is facing the other way, it would not work. crappiest pcmcia i had man.

Which card did you get; the one from Fry's? I got one of the cards I linked to in my first post in this thread and it does just fine anywhere in the house, which is a 3bdrm 2 bath, 1600 sq ft house. I haven't tried it outside but I don't anticipate any problem. AkumaX said this card has lousy range. I think, as mentioned also, that it has to do as much with the laptop as anything else.
Also, what are you referring to when you say "long distance". That is going to be as much a function of the router, access point or even antenna(s) involved; more than it is the adaptor.

My friends and I purchased two PCI airlink cards and a PCMCIA card for a laptop. The range is complete crap. Only when the router is is in my room can my desktop and my friends desktop pick up a consistent signal to the router. Also, when the router is in my room my friend in the next room gets a very weak signal. I'm sure its the airlink cards because my laptop with builtin wifi gets good reception anywhere in the house Know of any places that rate wifi cards?
