So I buy myself a new motherboard (KT7A-Raid), a Duron 750, 256mb RAM, get it... hook her up, (oh by the way.. they were supposed to send me a fop-32, but were out of stock so sent me a chrome orb) (or some kind of orb.... anyways..) Try and get the freaking heat sink on there right.. think I do.. get in all in.. hit the power.. nothing. Check everything.. take off HSF and cpu make sure it's all right.. throw it back on (get worried you broke that capactiator that's so damn close, cause you got the wrong stupid HSF) hit the switch.. nothing.. then you think.. idiot.. hit the power button in the front... fans start spinning.. cept that one on your cpu... uh oh.. turn it off.. look.. plug the damn thing in! Turn it on again.. hit power.. fans run.. everything in there nice and snug... monitor says "NO VIDEO SIGNAL". Uh oh. 2 Hours later. Uh Oh.

Next day... down to the computer shop.. "See if you can get it running for me..." *ring ring* "CPU fried? HSF installed wrong?"

First attempt at Duron install... fried chip. Phone company I bought it from.. send it to us, we'll send you a new one.

Duron 1

Time for round 2. (when the new one arrives next week)

i just built mine, it took me forever, but thanks to people on the forums, i figured my problems out.

make sure that your plugging your HSF into the FAN HEADER 1 slot. if you look at the 2 fan headers, the one closest to the DIMM slots is header 1. you need to have your HSF plugged into that or it won't boot up. it will shut down after about 10 seconds and you hear this really annoying BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP. ABIT Put this there so that people don't forget to put a fan on their cpu, its a good idea, but annoying cuz most of us arent stupid enough to forget ot put one on. theres a new bios version that allows you to turn that feature off..get it on the abit site.

but if you for sure know you fried your chip, im sorry. i feel ya.. i did that before and i was hella mad. :|

How long was it on before you noticed the fan wasnt working?

Are you positive that the duron wasnt already dead?I say this because The first time i got my tbird i left it off(no hs or fan! can you say idiot) for about 5s and it was fine. THis was a tbird which runs pretty hot...
So I think its highly unlikely that you fried it because the fan wasnt on.
Well anywayz, sorry for your loss :(

Well it might have been dead already... The fan was not on for like 5-6 seconds....

As for the thing where it shut's down if it's not plugged into fan1, well I read that that was disabled in the new bios.. by default. Buy you can turn it on. I definatley had stuff running and it wasn't plugged in.. no beep.

And yes, it's for sure dead because the guys at the computer shop threw in a different cpu and it booted up fine.

Hmm... the fan wasn't on and the chip fried... the chrome orb is very pick/finicky as far as clip....

Could have been that the heatsink was slighly tilted.

A Duron/TBird wouldn't live without a heatsink for much more then 5seconds, but it would probably live for about a minute or 2 with the fan off.
