Frustration with LGA775 motherboards. Will this combo work?

I've been trying to figure out the best combo for price/performance in the low(ish) end spectrum of eBay parts. It's a little frustrating though because many LGA775 motherboards don't support the C2Q series or, more specifically, the Q9xxx series. The main frustration comes from it being very difficult to find out support lists and such even when given the motherboard model number. This, for example, says it supports the C2Q series... it doesn't specify how far in it supports though. Some motherboards I come across will support the Q6xxx series but not the Q9xxx or Q8xxx series.
Also, there is a ton of different speeds and types for RAM.
If this combo won't work for whatever reason, I'll probably post more threads or ask in this thread for more help. I'm pretty much set on the Q9400. It's really good in price/performance, though I would take advice if one could find a better price/performance Xeon CPU or something in the same range.
If anyone's curious, my experience with compatibility is pretty limited and I really only know about newer hardware. I do know the performance of most hardware significantly better than I do compatibility.
With the info I've been given, will this combination work?

CPU
Motherboard
RAM

I understand that overclocking is very useful, but it's not absolutely needed for what I want to do. Keep that in mind if you try to help me out with the motherboard... it's nice if it does have it, but it's not needed.

The intel q/p/g/4X serries chipset is the latest 775 chipset( 🙂 breakthrough technology). They've all got support for the latest core 2 duo/quad class CPUs. I remember boards from manufacturers like gigabyte, asus, ... offering support for the latest CPUs even for their first shipping BIOS releases.

That seems like a q45 chipset motherboard. It should have support for the latest 775 CPUs. Your only concern is if you end up with a very old BIOS version or if Lenovo did something intentional and blocked some CPU models using BIOS.

Just be careful as it looks like that motherboard cannot be dropped inside a standard ATX case. The rear panel looks like it is physically placed backwards. You should be able to drop it only inside a IBM/Lenovo case from that era.

Maybe consider socket 1155 Pentium Gxxx series platforms.Very cheap also, and a little newer.

That was my thought... Sandy or Ivy would be a better build. It looks like the OP is set on 4 cores, so that rules out the very good SB/IB Pentiums, but an i3 and possibly a lower-end i5 is still a decent bargain, and with 1155 you are on DDR3... far more plentiful and easier to configure, and, as a CPU/mobo/RAM combo, more likely to stay relevant longer.

Although the C2D and C2Q were way to good for their time, most Gxxx cpu's still out performed the C2D's. And from a power standpoint, I bet they still beat the C2Q's. Does the OP really need 4 cores?
