Frustrating modem problems......

Hi. I just loaded WindowsXP Home on my PC. The first time I logged on to the internet I got the RPC error and started to get booted off all the time. Sure enough I had to blaster Worm. I removed it from the registry and got the patch but I`m still having problems. 9 times out of 10 my pages won`t display, and if I do by chance get somewhere for instance the microsoft update page, I can`t download more then 600kb before getting booted off. I tried different browsers, ISP`s and two different modems all with the same results. I scanned my system with System Works and it had possible virus problems and 20some registry errors, most of them reffering to ActiveX problems. I auto fixed them but they came back after I tried to get online a few times. I`ve tried modem drivers, and reinstalling windows but no results. When I finally got to MS Update page and scanned my PC, it said I need a bunch of updates. But how can I get the patches if I can`t get online long enough to download.

Any suggestions.....If I didn`t list it I haven`t tried it.

download from a friends pc, I would just get the critical updates, then burn them to a cd.

If the blaster worm virus is still preventing you from staying online. Remove it again from the registry and make sure the mblaster service is not running, then enable the built in firewall; this will allow you to stay online to get your updates....... the firewall built into windows xp will block the blaster worm.

You probably want to go a step further and DL a freeware firewall (you can find plenty of them online, Sygate, ZoneAlarm, etc). These firewalls work both ways so you'll know if something is trying to get in and if something is trying to broadcast out. WinXP firewall only blocks one way (in). Good luck to you!

Thanks for the ideas....I removed the MSBlast from the registry and installed the patch from MS. I made sure to activate the firewall before I got back online. I don`t get the RPC error anymore but I still get booted when I try and download more than a couple hundred KB`s. Some of the time my home page won`t even display....or any other page for that matter, and the task bar says I`m still connected. I tried a different modem at that point but it didn`t help. Does it sound like it might be a hardware problem? Every other application I run goes smooth. No problem at all....just when I get online.

I`m online with my WebTV and I can`t get to the MS Update. Is there a list of all the updates I can download from Microsoft? Without being able to get online to scan my PC I can`t be sure which ones I need.

Also is there a sure fire way to remove the virus/worm, like reformatting my HDD and installing windows. I`m open to any ideas. Thanks

On your last question...if you format the hdd and do a reinstall that will remove the worm and everything else.
