hi,

I have a coil whine issue in my rig which is very frustrating

(with headphones we hear much better on my speakers i can't hear it and I assure you it's audible IRL)

I had read that this kind of coil whine is not dangerous for the devices , whether it is the power supply or the graphics card, could you confirm it to me.

What is weird is that the noise occurs at + 30FPS +, i've limited FPS to find out it does not occurs only at high fps as i was used to with coil whining GPU... I try to play with the sliders of MSI afterburner and I can hear that the sound changes .

After that I only hear it if the fans are at their lowest and the panel is open so if it is certain that it cannot harm my configuration, it is not very serious but I would like to be sure.

However I would like to understand because the problem arises with:

  1. 2 different graphics cards (EVGA FTW3 2080ti and Asus Strix 2080ti Oc that someone gave me for test purposes). The two cards do not make this noise in another config
  2. 2 power supplies of the same model (Seasonic Ultra Prime titanium 850w)
  3. 2 motherboards of the same model. Asus Maximus Hero XI
  4. Cstate on and off
  5. Mod cable cables or original cable
  6. Tried other cables sent by seasonic
  7. trieds ferrites on the cables

it's driving me crazy mostly because I don't understand WHY

I've ordered a HX 850PSU by corsair and hope it will fix the issue.. Is there a chance it will?

Thanks for your help

It is the PSU. And Seasonic will do nothing about it. I have a fanless Seasonic PSU... that is the loudest device in my PC. A different PSU in the same PC doesn't whine. I tried to RMA the unit (still have over 2 years warranty left), but Seasonic doesn't even acknowledge any type of RMA after entering all the information on their website.

If you still have warranty, try to RMA and report back if you get any sort of response. Good luck!

I know there is a technical reason for coil whine, but I also know that 100% of my other electronics (inc. all other PC PSUs) don't whine. I know many of the Seasonic PSU are well regarded, but their warranty service is on par with a no-name PSU from Alieexpress.

I think you miss that part :)

I've sent back a first PSU and take another one, same model. Still same issue.

Can it be related to the model itself? Something not playing right with my other components?

I should receive another PSU today, HX850 since the HX series are not made by Seasonic...

You said the same model, so if there is a design flaw, it will be in both. you can try installing a different model (different design). If the whine disappears with he different type of PSU, you know it is this type of Seasonic PSU.
i don't know if you checked the serial# when you sent the first one back. Maybe they just sent you the same one back.

No I asked for a refund and bought on another website can't be the same one.

Maybe this specific model doesn't okay well with my other components is that possible?

Well, i just installed the Corsair one and seems it's exactly the same issue ... maybe a LITTLE less.

i'm VERY FRUSTRATED.

I might keep the corsair since i have no will tu remove it and put back the seasonic now but I don't know what do to anymore.

I can send back the sesonic untill 14th of september so I have time to see i guess but which one would you keep?
I feel like the corsair is slighly more silent, i have 3 weeks to see i guess :)

I'll live with this coil whine and hope the next gpu I'll buy won't have it

Also the seasonic made that but the corsair is doing it too is it normal to have a loud clac at shutdown ?

If you can return to vendor, do it now. Coil whine or any other noise is not acceptable. but make sure the noise comes fromt he PSU, not the GPU (may have to move your ear around)
Once the vendor "return" time is over, you have to go through manufacturer. And they will ignore you, or at least have you pay for shipping, and have you without a PSU until they send a new one (if at all).

Ask me how I know that the manufacturer ignores you when you try to RMA.....

I never tried that, but you could use a stethoscope to listen to where exactly the whine comes from. Should be able to tell if it is GPU or PSU.
Or live with it......

A cheaper way than a stethoscope is a length of tubing. Works the same but is vastly cheaper and easier to obtain.

I assumed most people have a stethoscope to listen if injection nozzles work....oh, wrong forum :)

There is a vast difference in how much you can hear between just a tube and a stethoscope. to start, the stethoscope uses both ears. If a tube would work the same, doctors wouldn't use a stethoscope. Does a tube work? sure...
