I just replaced the motherboard in my Dell Latitude. This is the 3rd motherboard so far. Of course Dell never sends a new motherboard, just refurbished crap. The reason the board had to be replaced is because certain keys stopped working which for the CPx latitudes is an obvious motherboard failure.

Anyways, since replacing the board the machine is locking up. No blue screens or reboots. Just hard locks. The problem is completely random. I ran some burn in programs to stress the machine for 3 hours and the laptop passed with flying colors. Then 2 hours later while just reading a webpage it locks up.

I could troubleshot this a lot better if it would just blue screen or reboot. Nothing is showing up in the event viewer that would indicate the problem. Only thing I have noticed is that the hard drive light is ALWAYS on when it locks up which leads me to think to either the IDE controller is screwed or the hard drive is messed up.

I really don't want to go through the hassle of getting another motherboard from dell.

Any ideas about what could be causing this?

My next move is reformat since it is possible something good messed up in WinXP.

BTW, the reason I am able to get the motherboards myself is because at my old job, I worked as a "Dell Certified technician". Problems were much easier to fix because I could eliminate problems by swapping parts til I found the problem. My old boss really liked me so anytime I have a problem she just orders the replacement parts and sends them to me.

I would think that if board after board are going bad then you may have something else wrong with the unit. But, to answer your question, I would go ahead and re-format the drive and re-install XP.
