Frustrated with F@H

Maybe I'm just being too picky but I'm a bit weary of the client.

I previously posted about my PPD sucking and it seems the only way to revive that is with the SMP client. Which kind of renders my machines unusable for other things.

What is really bothersome is that unlike BOINC apps (such as Rosetta), F@H can't really be configured to run idle when the PC's in use and crank up when idle for say, xxx minutes. I know, its supposed to run on idle priority but believe me that is not the case for the non-SMP clients.

Secondly, I have two 64 bit machines with 8GB RAM. It's really stupid that there is no 64 bit SMP client. I got it to work anyway, but its ridiculously buggy and the deinoMP won't work with 64bit software either. Ditto for the new GPU client.

I think my four machines are going to waste running FAH. Perhaps time to go back to Rosetta (or another cruncher)

I run 2 SMP clients (5.91) at the same time with FAH affinity changer and 1 GPU2 client, the SMP clients run all the time, they never slow down my PC at all. I have to shut down the GPU2 client if I want to game though.

I share your angst with these beta projects. I have a small farm of boxes that fold for the cause but they take way more time to manage than I have. So my points go up and down. I guess we are close to the source with beta and enjoy the benefits of emerging processes and the down side of bugs and the like. Otherwise, we'd still be using 5.04!

Don't give up, stay the course and if you have time and expertise, help the beta makers.

Keep folding,

Gravity

What sorts of CPUs and OSes are having slowdowns for you? My WinXP boxes are all well behaved, but I can't speak at all for Vista.

I like the project a lot and don't mind betas, but if it isn't working out for you, see if another project appeals rather than letting one make you unhappy!

I saw zero difference in ppd from 8800GS (650/900) on 177.41 under Vista x64 (SP1) and 32-bit Windows XP (SP3). The only difference I saw at all was under Vista my e8400 ran 7-8% on one core while folding while under XP one core ran at the max and stayed that way.

So if you're going to run SMP alongside the GPU client you're better off using Vista because it optimizes CPU core use better.
