Hi, this is my first post in this forum. I just got a couple of Uniden FRS 420 hand-held walkie-talkie radios from CircuitCity (they were $10 each, so I don't feel bad about tinkering with them). I work in a large building, requiring communication through as many as four floors, across 300 or more feet. While they recieve signals well from anywhere in the building, the transmissions only go 80 or 90 feet (walls included), then the signal starts to degrade (low volume, static, no signal at all). That makes them pretty much useless. So I took one apart and looked at the "internal antenna." It is a coil of copper wire about 1.5 inches long. My first thought was that the coil was acting as an inductor, thus inhibiting the sending of EM waves. But when I straightened a part of it, the radio stopped recieving from 4 or more feet. Does anyone have a solution? Can I possibly boost the send signal from my working radio? Can I fix the receive on my "broken" radio? Thanks for your help.

Edit: I should mention that we already use several Motorola Talkabout T5420 radios (also FRS band), and those seem to transmit from places where the Unidens don't. In fact, the Motorolas can run the length of the building (transmit), whereas the Unidens won't (although both receive across the building).

how many milliWatts are these Unidens rated at? the POWER they put out. compare that power the the rated power output of the Motorola radios. for $10 I wouldn't expect more than 100 mW output, whereas the Talkabouts are probably 500 mW output.

My boss told me the same thing. I assumed that because the Unidens and the Motorolas were rated for the same distance, they would have the same output. I just checked the manual and it says that the output power on the Unidens are "500mW ERP maximum." What does ERP mean?

how to fix the b roken radio: build a coil as similar to the orignial as u can
by wrapping copper wire around a cylander such as a screwdriver. then remove the cylander and the copper wire retains is perfect coils. how to improve the output?
a booster stage . make one with a transister that works at the frequency you need.
(simplified XPlanation)

Wow, I thought this thread had died. Thanks for reviving it, capybara. I think I got the antenna working again (as you suggested). I also found a solution to output. It seems that if I use a headset mic, it transmits much better. My best guess is that the headset mic acts as a passive antenna. I'd like to try that "booster stage" idea. Can you help me with some resources on this?

3 ways to go about this:
1, build it from scratch component by component ( hardest)
2. buy an amplifier chip from radio shack - but make sure it can handle the
freq u need. get one with a circuit diagram included
3. radio shack sells $20 booster amps designed for cable tv, and theyre good up to 900mhz, which should work 4 u.:) [easiest solution]

Be careful with booster amps, especially broadband amps like the one suggested. If you overdrive then they will produce spurs.
The FRS service is limited to 500mw max and shares spectrum with other services.

So are you saying that I might have the FCC knocking on my door? I think I'll put this project on hold until after finals.
