Froyo WIFI issues?

I'm having a rather aggravating issue with my Samsung Epic. A coworker experienced the same issue on a Nexus One (before destroying it, so I can't test with the Nexus).

Basically ever since the Froyo update I cannot successfully re-connect to WIFI without disabling/enabling WIFI on the phone. To make matters worse the phone thinks it's connected when it comes back in range, & elects not to use 3G. It sits there with no connectivity until I bounce wifi, then everything works until I let the phone sleep again & it's back to no connection.

The only work-around is to leave wifi off until you want to use it, then disable it again when you're done.

I've run every Froyo build released so far for the Epic: DK28, EB13, and EC05. I've flashed using the full download straight from Samsung, and the EC05 update from Google's servers. I've hard reset the phone several times, updated everything there is to update, and still nothing.

I'm getting annoyed enough to consider replacing the phone, but since a coworker has experienced the same issue with a Nexus One I'm not convinced this is an Epic problem. Unfortunately that Nexus is now in a public urinal somewhere in Chicago so I can't really compare.

Anybody seen this before? I'm having no luck with Google, perhaps I'm just not searching right.

Never had any wifi issues on any of the four Android phones I've had running Froyo(Nexus One, Droid Incredible, Droid X, Thunderbolt). I'd take the phone to Sprint and see what they say about it.

I used to have this problem intermittently on my Froyo Nexus One as well - not every time, but at least once every few days it would exhibit the problem you are describing. It seemed to be worse when the wifi signal was weak.
Unfortunately, I never really found a great solution until the Gingerbread update fixed it. It doesn't happen any more.

I assume you have the Wifi sleep policy set to "never" in the advanced settings?

The only workaround I can think of is to use an app like Tasker or Timeriffic to automatically turn the wifi on/off (or go into and then out of Airplane Mode) at some regular interval. This would be annoying in many ways but it would at least keep the phone connected to wifi the majority of the time.

Ah, I found the xda-developers thread on this issue with the N1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731395
Not everyone had it, and it turned out to be a driver problem that was fixed and added to CyanogenMod.

I believe it was then incorporated into the last N1 build of Froyo (in retrospect, that may have actually been the point when I first started seeing improvement) and then Gingerbread.

0 wifi issues like you describe here on EVO. I roam in and out of many trusted WIFI points all day long and its seamless. it switches without me having to do anything.
Had nightmares with my Epic was a POS...

That sounds like precisely what I'm experiencing.

Yes wifi is set to never sleep, & my MAC starts with non-zero. I might need to look at one of the 3rd party ROMs that incorporate the fix, looks like I'm hosed on official fixes until Gingerbread (lame!).

Haven't seen this issue on my Droid, might be something specific to your phone.

Yeah, I haven't seen this on my Fascinate. Granted, it's running a leaked/superclean ROM but WiFi seems fine.

It's a epic issue with EB and EC flashes. I find I am running into issues where my WiFi just refuses to connect sometimes and if I go into the Wifi settings it will say "error connecting" in which case I need to throw it into airplan mode and then back out to fix it.

I don't have an issue to your extent. You may have a bad flash or a different issue? Might want to try to Odin back to DI18 and then let the phone OTA update?

I have an Epic with EC05 and can't reproduce what you're experiencing.

I've seen that as well, I've had a few times where airplane mode or a reboot were necessary to restore connectivity.

Maybe I should take it back to the store, I hear they can flash back to DI18.

I do love this phone in general so if I can get this working I'd prefer to keep it.
