Hi all,

I have a university account that allows space for personal web pages. The accounts they give us are Unix shell accounts. They instruct us to put everything into a directory called ~/public_html within our home directory. BTW, the university does NOT support FrontPage extensions. Is there an easy way so that I can "publish" my webs using frontpage to my university public_html folder??
I know I can manually ftp everything myself, but I want to be able to make changes often, and using "publish" is much simpler. I've tried doing the following:

1) File -> Publish Web -> Publish destination = ftp://www.duke.edu/~myusername/public_html. When doing this, I get an error stating "The FTP session was terminated"

2) Start -> Programs -> My Network Places. I then create a network place called ftp://myusername@godzilla.acpub.duke.edu/public_html.
I then get prompted to create a web at this location because its empty, and then when it goes to connect I get an error that says "Could not find a webserver at myusername@godzilla.acpub.duke.edu. Please make sure that the webserver name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure everything is correct, the webserver may be out of order temporarily".

3) I tried creating a network place that hard-coded my path into the ftp URL. IE, the network place was called:
ftp://godzilla.acpub.duke.edu/afs/users/var/myusername/public_html. After trying this, I got the same error above in # 2.

What am I doing wrong? Is there an easy way to get FrontPage to work with my school's FTP server???

I'm running WinXP Pro with FrontPage 2002. University account is a unix csh account. Any help appreciated.

The server has to support FrontPage extensions to use the publish command in FrontPage to post your web site. So you are out of luck. And any FrontPage-specific web stuff won't work either, like if you used FP's rollover buttons or database connectivity.

Ah yes, Mickeysoft strikes again. I've been dealing with this problem recently as well, only I'm on the hosting side of the situation.

You have a few choices.

-Switch to Dreamweaver and hopefully it will accomplish the same thing you were trying to do in Front Page.
-Get the web server administrator to install the Front Page Extensions on the server (probably ain't gonna happen).
-Continue using Front Page and leave out the "features" that would require the extensions.

I don't know what specifically your trying to do on your page that uses the extensions. It could be anything from a simple navigation bar, to some kind of registration form.

It should be no surprise, but I've found that if your using FP2000+ and your uploading to a W2k server running IIS5.0 that has the FP extensions installed, everything works beautifully. Is this Microsoft's way of adding features, or crippling alternative software? You make the call.

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice thu far.......what I'm trying to do on my pages is simple stuff (family photos, resume, etc).

There is nothing that requires FP extensions per se. The reason I want to use the "Publish" command is that it makes updating the pages on a regular basis a LOT easier. (I know I can just go and ftp the files there, but its a pain sometimes).

I use "publish" too because it sets up the links correctly.

AFAIK, you don't need to have FP extensions on the server to use publish. I used to used Geocities to host a site a few years ago and I used FP98 without a hitch. I just configured it according to the instructions. FP extensions are for the various widgets that FP uses (Webbots). Hmmmm....it's been a long time.
