That FA was pretty interesting. The series of events leading up to the camps being extermination sites was put in a linear fashion and past knowledge arranged itself in a different way. In other words, while I knew most of the facts before, but having picked up things randomly I hadn't bothered to put them together. Hmm, having a hard putting together sentences this morning too.

Something the author tries to change is the "I was just doing my job" German. While he found Russians and Japanese soldiers gave him that response, Nazi war criminals said "at the time I thought what I was doing was right". Then detailed the process that lead to it. Worth a listen.

Part of the German effort in coming to terms with the atrocities of the Second World War has been the opening up of concentration camps for all to see. The most notorious of these is Auschwitz, a location that saw unspeakable horrors unfold as the war raged. This series takes a look at the events and history of Auschwitz in a six-part program. Exhaustive research was undertaken, with victims and perpetrators of the crimes committed at the site spoken to at length. Reenactments help provide a gruesome visualization of the events, alongside some shocking archive footage. A comprehensive, detailed history of Auschwitz, this is the definitive word on the appalling scenes that took place there.

That was by far the most graphic accounting I've seen of the camps. Forcing the SS officers to carry the emaciated and broken bodies of their victims seemed like just recompense, at least in the immediate sense. The stench must have been incredible.
