charging for carry on bags? wtf

http://www.flyfrontier.com/faqs/baggage-faqs

Everyone, regardless of your Fare Option, is allowed to carry on one personal item for free.

Frontier offers two Fare Options that give you the ability to purchase travel that includes the amenities you need or want.

Classic Plus fares include one carry-on bag and one personal item.

OR

Economy fares must pay a fee to take a carry-on bag on all domestic and international itineraries. This fee varies based on the point of purchase and is waived for Ascent and Summit level members of EarlyReturns.

ZOMG! I don't get a free meal when flying transcontinental in economy class! I am outraged!

Maybe he missed the memo that Spirit Airlines has been doing this for a while.

I think the outrage is that people fly with a bag o' stuff. I think it's ridiculous that a traveler will need to pay for the bag, whether it's checked or carried on. If these airlines sold shoes, they would charge extra for shoelaces.

The investment company who owned Spirit Airlines now owns Frontier. :)

think of it as itemized costs.

Some may not travel with a carry on bag, perhaps on business, perhaps if they have family in one area that has some of their stuff. These people get to take that flight cheaper.

Would you prefer everybody pay more non-negotiable just so you don't have to "pay" for your carry-on?

Well the flip side is that if you don't have a bag of stuff your ticket is cheaper. Want better service? Go with a better more full service airline.

ppl outraged are not good at math.

and OP, you even break it down, Frontier offer two OPTIONS, so you can choose what you want.

so, option 1

Classic Fare: $100
and you get a carry on for free.

Economy Fare: $90
but charge you, say, $10 for one carry on. then you "break even"

so just have to work out which one make sense for you.

In response to posts 6 and 7,
-The vast majority of flyers will have at least a bag.
-The "base" fare is not going to be lower because the airline now charges for carry-on bag. (They want you to believe that.)
-It's another hassle, having to take care of the additional fee.

So fly southwest while cheapo travelers with no bags fly frontier

:shrugs:

it's not hard math

IF (frontier ticket costs + baggage costs) > (southwest ticket costs) THEN (buy southwest ticket) ELSE (buy frontier ticket)

Luckily they don't charge you for wearing clothes yet.

Just dress in layers and take advantage of cargo pants.

Yep - anyone who didn't see added fees coming to Frontier wasn't paying attention. I'm suprised this didn't start happening sooner.

Southwest has its own problems and I say that as a frequent Southwest passenger. The frequent airline consolidations have been nothing but lose lose for travelers

they'll install dildos on every seat so that they can actually fuck you in the ass. they have a fucked up sense of humor - the fee will be to remove the dildo (ie fucking you in the ass to stop fucking you in the ass).

This. Most people tend to forget that.

I used to fly Frontier all the time and they didn't used to be a barebones garbage airlines. But they definitely are now. Sucks for people with their miles program as those miles are worthless to me now.

Also, for the people that say to just find another airlines. That is fine now, until the industry goes this way and we are paying 50% more for the same flight. Thankfully Southwest is making money and hasn't changed, but who knows for how long.

Southwest is not perfect but I will gladly take them over any of the other airlines in a split second.

Spirit is losing money on my dad. He goes to Florida about once a month and already has clothes down there. His round trip fares are below 50 bucks most of the time.

Why? Do you enjoy missing all your connections and arriving late to your destination? Even if you didn't notice they went from the best on time arrival rating to consistently one of the worst and certainly the worst of the big airlines. Their lack of a hub\spoke network and exceedingly limited reserve capacity leaves them extremely vulnerable to delays piling up. Because of their setup a delay in one region of the country will cause a ripple effect of delays that the legacies do not suffer from.

I despise Delta's frequent flier program but they actually do a very good job with flight operations. Just don't expect much else from them

as long as any purse larger than a handpurse is charged as a carry-on, it doesn't seem awful (though I'd certainly use another airline if the prices were similar otherwise)

To be fair, Spirit is also that much cheaper than every other airline. So, they simply use the "lower price + fee" to entice people to buy their ticket rather than the other airline that is simply "price" with a free bag.

Also, Spirit only charges for bags that won't fit under the seat in front of you.

They should just start charging by the pound. Give us a rate and step on a scale with all your luggage at the gate and be billed.
