"Front USB" vs "Front USB 2.0"?

Is the plug head for USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 different? How come some cases mention "front USB 2.0" and other just "front USB" ?

thanks,

cmai

Basically it has been certfied for usb 2.0 which is faster. Front usb would just be like 1.0 which is slower but still fast IMHO.

This was the answer I was looking for. So then If I bought a Front USB 1.1, could I buy cables to replace them so that it supports USB 2.0?

Different cabling in what way? I was under the impression that the physical wiring is identical, as are the connectors. Maybe the USB 2.0 cable is certified for higher speeds, like CAT5e is - or what AMDskip said.🙂

That's what I thought too, Jeff. I know the plugs are identical, which allows for backwards compatibility with USB 1.2 devices. The pinouts can be different, but there's no standard for those anyway, even within the different specs (1.2 or 2.0).

The USB 1.x cables don't need to be shielded - many USB 1.x front panel cables are just ribbon wire.
USB 2.0 cables need to be shielded. If you're only going to use the front ports for USB 1.x devices, it doesn't matter.

Where's the :sun: ??
