Front USB Ports

I have a A64 3200 system, with a VNF3-250 Mobo. The back I/O USB Ports work fine, but the front ones do not recognize any devices that draws power from USB itself. It will work with anything that has an outside power source such as an Gaming Steering Wheel, and iPod, but will not recognize my USB Thumb Drive, Joystick, or card reader. Anybody know what's going on? I'm certain that everything is plugged in correctly.

Yo, I'm looking for answers too. We might be able to help each other. I have seen same , with a twist, that is that my fronts do see a 64Mb Flashdrive, but not a 256, that is unless I add a externally power 4 port USB hub. So, what does this mean, probably that the Mobo does not supply enought current (200ma) needed for a full USB port. The back 4 ports work fine. I think you have hit it with the 'non-powered'. I have had a hard time searching to find someone with the same symptom.

It's possible that it may be in the Case itself, if that what is the issue, as I've had a couple that were not equipped with Official USB 2.0 ports and only supported 1.1 speed...Skyhawks and some Generic ones... They did not state that USB Hi-Speed was supported but neither did others such as Chenming and they handle it with no problems.

New Update: SOLUTION FOUND: The Sonata case cable (Antec) to the front ports is the problem! I swapped it out with a different cable and my mobo sees the 256M ThumbDrive. Weird that a 64M works but a 256 does not. I an not sure if the 64 is a 1.0 or 2.0 USB, Its a Lexar, its probably a 1.0, so the cable could be noisy for a 2.0. I could try setting my CMOS setting to 1.0 only and see what happens. I'll report back when I find out. that test result.

some cases use a cheaper usb port on front panels. these do no have the ability to supply enough electricity for some devices. go to a powered hub to fix this issue

Your solution is not a 'fix', it is a workaround. Did you mean to say 'some mobo' instead of cases? I have already determined that an external powered usb hub in serial will work, and also that simply using a different cable (shorter and has the shield grounded on both ends) works.. It could be a combination of both the cable not being shielded and the mobo not driving enough voltage/current.

I don't want to 'patch' it, I want it to work the way it is intended to work. The whole idea of front ports is not to have bulky external boxes and cables.
