Front USB ports won't recognize larger pendrives

I have an ASRock Extreme3 mobo in a Chieftec case. The case comes with a dual USB 2.0 port in the front. I also have a third port included in a Rosewill card reader. That port works perfectly, but the Chieftec ports only recognize smaller USB drives. I've tested everything from 528 megs to 4 gigs with no problem, but none of my 16 GB drives are recognized. I've switched the headers they are plugged into and the problem remained. I also tested a separate USB port and that works perfectly. So, apparently the problem is the Chieftec port, but why does it only work with smaller drives? And is there a possible solution?

I built my wife's Extreme3 in a Lian Li case, and have the front USB 2.0 ports connected to the USB4_5 header on the mobo. I just went in and tested a 32 GB Pqi USB 3.0 thumb drive and it works just fine.

It may be that the Chieftec ports are defective, but I'm more inclined to suspect corrupt drivers. If you've got a PS/2 mouse; shutdown and connect it, then use it to uninstall everything under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" in Device Manager, then reboot. Reinstall the Intel USB drivers after Windows gets done installing the native USB drivers.

One other thing; I had problems with ASRock's XFast USB app conflicting with the Intel drivers right after I first installed it so I got rid of it, haven't missed it, and haven't had any more USB problems since.

Thanks Bubbaleone. I reinstalled the Bus Controller, but also had to reinstall the USB Hubs to get the ports recognized again. However, that didn't solve the problem. I've always been a little suspicious of the Chieftec header cables (I had to rewire one when I was using an Asus mobo) and even though the wiring looks correct, I swapped out the original cable with a spare one and now all three ports are finally working. It all remains a bit mysterious to me, but so long as they are working....

what do the wires look like that go to the headers? most cheap cases ive seen are actually unsheilded! so the front usb ports, while techincally connected to 2.0 headers, give you just enough speed to run a keyboard at best.

They look like pretty much every dual cable - 9 wires bundled into a plastic sleeve with no visible shielding. Speed though has never been a problem with any of the front ports or rear ports on my machines.
