Front USB Ports not working

My dad recently got given an spare PC. It was previously running Windows XP without SP1 or 2 and only had USB 1.1 drivers. the front USB ports worked fine with all devices (though reasonably slowly). We recently reformatted and installed Windows XP SP2 and USB 2.0 drivers.

The rear USB ports continue to work fine. However the front USB ports do not. The ports recognize that a device is attached, but then up pops an error message and you cannot access the device.

I do not have the spec of the system on me now (or the exact error message) but i can get them if required.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this? is it likely to be related to
1) changing from USB 1.1 to USB 2.0 drivers
2) the installation of SP1/2
3) none of the above
4) stupid question go away

Cheers

Did you install the chipset drivers?

Also, I think that if you want full usb 2 functionality, you might have to get a usb 2 pci card and stick that in.

To check if you have usb 2, go to device manager, view, by connection, see the usb connections - if they are enhanced, then you have usb 2.
If not, then install a usb 2 pci card - very cheap nowadays.

Re- front connectors, as long as you haven't opened up the system and disconnected anything, then the only thing I can think of would be that the chipset drivers aren't installed properly.
That is as long as the front connectors used to work before you formatted/reinstalled xp, which you said they were.
