What kind of performance increase can one expect when upping their front side bus from 533 mhz to 800 mhz (or even 1 gigahertz). Reason I'm asking is I have a 1 year old Dell P4 2.4B system, so its locked and can't overclock it. People keep telling me to sell it off and spend a bit of money to get a mobile 2600+ etc etc.

So how worth it is it? Speaking from mostly gaming point of view.

Btw, I get 5500 3dmarks on stock radeon 9800 pro.

a 2600+ has 266 or 333 mhz FSB....

Right now the fastest FSB is waiting for the CPU. P4 CPU's which are currently the only 800FSB CPU's I know of are slower than A64+ CPUs running 400FSB's.

Depends on what you do with your rig. 2.4 and a 9800 pro and a gig of ram is all you reall need for gaming or anything else. You wouldnt have to switch to amd to get a faster bus, just put in a new intel 800mhz bus speed processor.

I think that you are a little confused on what the front side buss is..

# 3.06GHz with 533 MHz system bus support HT Technology1
# 3.06GHz with 533 MHz system bus support HT Technology1
# 800 MHz system bus available with speeds at 3.20, 2.80, 2.60 and 2.40 GHz; 533 MHz system bus available with speeds at 3.06, 2.80, 2.66, 2.53 and 2.40 GHz; 400 MHz system bus available with speeds at 2.60, 2.50 and 2.40 GHz[/quote]

Yea, my Dell motherboard doesn't support 800 mhz fsb.

I was pointing to the mobile AThlons because everyone OCs them to 3200+ speeds, which = 400 fsb.

But good to know I'm not planning on upgrading anytime soon.

A64s don't run at 400Mhz, they run at 1.6Ghz.

they dont actually run 800 mhz fsb, its is 200mhz multiplied by a factor of the 4 transfer pipelines giving an effective DATA TRANSFER of 800mhz.....thats for intel, amd is 200 running 2 piplines for 400mhz data transfer speed, in theory 4 pipelines transfer much more data than 2 but there are many other factors in the equation and they actually end up being about the same performance wise, not exactly the same, but pretty close...
