Front port Mic sound quality

I am trying to resolve a sound quality issue with the front ports of my computer case.

I recently upgraded to a Thor case and since I changed my video card, I had to bump out my dedicated sound card(X-Fi)

In the old case I used to get complaints that the front ports made my headset sound like I was in a chopper. I thought at the time that it was the X-Fi card but now that I have switched to the motherboard sound, the chopper sound is back. This leads me to believe that I am doing something wrong with the case setup.

The chopper sounds strongest when I try to use the front ports.

Any thoughts?

Check your BIOS and make sure you're using HD Audio instead of AC97 audio. Also make sure you've got the latest drivers, then check that the environment settings are set to <none>.

You can also check your microphone settings for Noise Suppression and Acoustic Echo Cancellation.

If that doesn't clear things up, try booting a Linux LiveCD/USB and test the microphone. If you still have the "chopper" sound it's most likely a hardware problem.

Also make sure the wires from your front panel to the motherboard are properly installed and not snagged on a capacitor or pinched in a hard drive mount or anything crazy like that, it could be a damaged wire or EMI.
