I have a rather old case, the Antec SLK1650, and I've worked on it with countless systems since about 2003, so I'm sure the front panel USB cable is in pretty bad shape. About 1/5 of the time when I go to connect a USB device to it, the monitor immediately loses signal, and all that happens is the fans continue to spin and the PWR LED stays lit.
So I know it's gotta be a short somewhere from the wire to the chassis, but I have 2 questions about it:
1. Why doesn't it occur everytime I connect a device the front panel USB header?
2. Why wouldn't it completely shut down the system?
Thanks.
Specs:
Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R
E8400
4 GB G.skill
8800 gt
WD 640gB and 750gB.
EDIT: BTW, I know it's a shorting issue because when it happens, I don't even complete the connection with my flash drive or mouse or whatever, I just have to make contact with the USB connector on the case.
