Front Loading Washing Machines...Looking for feedback.

My wife and I will be purchasing a new washing macine this weekend. She would like a front loading one. I've read several things about them not cleaning as well and numerous accounts of mold causing unplesant smells. Have any of you experienced any of this?

I've had an LG front loader for about 4 years now and haven't had any problems with it. You just need to leave the door open a crack when you aren't using it to let it dry out to keep mold from forming.

i leave the door open on my washing machine(front loader) because i have experienced the mildew smell. also, top loaders are better in case you forgot a shirt or extra clothing. can't throw it in last minute without completely stopping it. something to consider.

you gotta buy and use the cleaning stuff and keep the door open always when not in use

also, if your floor is not very stable and level, the noise/shaking from the spin cycle can be unpleasant

i still recommend

I have a little hand towel I leave over the top of the door. After I'm finished doing laundry for hte day, I'll take it and wipe up the little gasket by the door and throw it over the door so it stays open a little bit. No problems so far, 2 years in.

I feel like it cleans fine. I ran my white dress shirts through and it got all of the colors back to bright white again.

The newer top loaders are now much more efficient, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one over a front loader for the last couple of years...

Yeah, as others have said, leave the door ajar. I also clean my machine about once a month by running it on hot cycle with a cup of bleach and one towel. It does the trick of removing any off smells from the door being shut by accident.

Front loader here. They're very common in Europe because we have smaller houses/apartments, and you can store stuff on them or stack a (front loading) tumble dryer on top to save space.

When we moved in, it hadn't been used for a long time, and smelled a little. But after running it empty at the highest temperature 2-3 times, the smell went away. No problems since, just leave the door slightly open when not using it.

just got a front load washer less than a year ago. i love it. uses less water, and everything is still cleaned very well. i dont have any problems with smell/mildew, but as pretty much everyone here has mentioned, i leave the door open between washes. the model i got has a sanitize option to clean the washer as well. also, make sure you are using the correct detergent if you get a front loader that is HE.

I wouldn't buy another one. I don't even think they clean as well either. Definately get a stand and as others have said you have to leave the door open.

the other issue you will have is that the rubber mold attaching the drum to the front panel will wear and crack allowing water to seep through. They are a bitch to replace.

Like classy, I wouldn't buy another. Go with a HE toploader. Bigger, better and cooler. I have this and love it.

I've actually noticed this starting to happen with my front loader in the last month or two. There will be a small puddle of water on the floor in front of the machine where it leaked out. It's hardly any right now though, so I haven't done anything about it. I just wipe it up with a paper towel afterward since its a ceramic floor.

Thanks for all the info guys. Keep it coming. Is using the HE detergent a big deal?

yes.
HE detergent makes less suds and is specifically designed for washers that use less water.

you will need HE fabric softener as well.

also, i totally forgot one nice advantage, you can fit a lot more laundry in, helpful for comforters, bulky bed spreads.

I've had a matched LG Tromm set for 6-7 years now. It has been nearly flawless. Only issue so far is a failed motor which was covered under warranty. It failed shortly after being moved cross country so that may or may not have been a legitimate failure but it's been fine since (and far longer than the original motor).

I've never wiped down a gasket or ran any cleaners, I just leave the door open (in the closed position though, not hanging wide open). No mold/mildew issues whatsoever.

If you pushed me to come up with downsides the only real issue is the cycle length isn't very short. Wash times of over an hour are not uncommon at all. Not really a big deal for me, but if you were a busy household that did laundry all day every day you might wish for faster wash times.

In short I love them and I'm not going back.
